As a frequent flier, I've ended up in that position more than a time or 2 (I missed a wedding on one unfortunate occasion).
I know the time has passed, but for future reference, toughing it out at the airport is the safest option in the daytime. A rare standby seat may open-up, or another carrier could be negotiated.
Overnight, you can find a really cheap hotel with a courtesy shuttle and get some shut-eye (unless some event has the rooms booked) -- just call around on the courtesy phones if you don't have a cell handy. It all depends on your stamina, budget, and how refreshed you need to be the next day.
