E85 sounds good, but you can also try other tricks such as water injection, or even CNG or propane.

E85 requires nothing but pulling up to an E85 pump.

Limited availability of ethanol might become a matter of concern. It's not Brazil.

Or do I drop the V-8 and stuff an EcoBoost 3.5L in there?
Decisions, decisions.

UPDATES:
So, I've replaced all the ball joints, dropped it 1.25" in the front, installed my a-pillar gauge pod complete with tach, vacuum, and voltmeter gauges. Had a massive misfire and a failed #3 injector. That's all replaced and it's running very well. So well, in fact, that I've broken my record for longest distance on a tank. The record was 518 miles, but now it's 541.5 miles and climbing because I haven't run out of fuel yet.
This just makes me want to put that lower grille block, chin spoiler, and 2.73s gears in much more badly.
I'll keep you guys updated.

That's closing in on 30 mpg if my Google info is correct; not too shabby!

Correct. It ended up averaging 28.9 mpg over the entire tank of gas.
Now for the mods for the return trip and continued efficiency.
Before:
And after, with the addition of the Mach1 chin spoiler, and a lower grille block. The chin spoiler is plastic, and the grille block is aluminum. It's from my 93 Grand Marquis, and I had to invert it so it would fit better.
These two alone should get me really close to 30 mpg.
I'm also adding two aluminum panels between the bottom of the bumper cover, and the control arms. That should fill in the gaps from the cross-member forward.
Hopefully, they'll be installed tonight. We'll see.
Another trip to Indy is scheduled on Monday. I'm really trying for 30 mpg.
