Taunting the riceboys

A couple weeks ago, JethroBodine reminded me about the LGT performance guys and their attitude towards FE- and their disbelief. Well, this morning was my first fill-up since then. I had a good tank, got a picture and threw down the gauntlet. I'll post some of the funnier responses, and I think I'll keep posting tank pics there.

That's some solid mileage! I have (well, my woman has it atm) a 97 OBW, the only things changed on it are the wheels (some nice wrx wheels, a little larger and lighter, but I put slightly smaller tires on so the speedo reads about the same), the 2.2l intake pipe (less bends, no giant resonator), a "fresh" motor (ej25 headgasket issue), and a nice msd ignition replacement. She logged a fairly consistent 27-30mpg range to and from work. Her commute is about 35 miles, mostly hilly highway. I wonder what she could get if she were a hypermiler.....

This is fun. Riceboys don't like seeing performance that doesn't involve shiny things or buying stuff. Or that requires an attention span longer than 1/4 mile. The admins even moved the thread from "Performance/Dyno Numbers/Track Times" to "Model Specific Forums/Fourth Generation Legacy (2005 - 2009)"

Here's a recap of relevant responses:

-cool story bro

-So you're saying that you are committing odometer fraud?

-Note to self, do not buy his car.

-did you use just the MPG read out or did you tabulate actual fuel consumption?

-^ c'mon. We all know that the read out is dead-on-balls accurate. I doubled the size of my injectors and now I'm running over 40 mpg in the city. That's pretty good increase just changing one thing.

-No performance or dyno or power numbers here. Congratulations, you drive like a grandma and insult the GT to the highest level. Now put on some real tires and enjoy your car a little more!

-clearly the OP is dillusional

-Im confused. WHERE THE F IS THE PERFORMANCE?

-Weight redux. OP runs car with <1 gallon in the tank.

-1st of all, that's not performance.. that's fuel economy.
2nd, if anyone here was really concerned about fuel economy, they wouldn't have bought an LGT.

-**** fuel economy, i want economy fuel

I'll be posting my second tank there either later today or tomorrow.

Nah, this tank didn't break 500 miles and it's down from the last one by more than one mpg. Maybe they'll find it more believable?

I'm a little torn by this thread. There's another thread somewhere on here (I'd link it, but I'm feeling lazy) about how big motor performance nuts like to routinely join in order to troll here. This seems to be a similar type of behavior.
On one hand, I think anyone who doesn't appreciate 'performance' as a goal that you can modify your behavior or vehicle to try and meet, regardless of whether that goal is mpg, hp, tq, times, etc should really open their eyes (the people on the other forum, being d-bags about your mileage). On the other hand, while I applaud your achievement (it certainly gives me a target to work towards with my OBW), I feel a little bit like seeing this thread (or at least the title) is a couple of steps in the wrong direction.
I'm all about optimization; real optimization (when it comes to ICE engines and cars in general) results in not only better fuel efficiency, but quite often more power/'performance' as well. For example, removing your power steering pump (pulley driven) will reduce parasitic drag on the motor, allowing you to get better fuel efficiency; it ALSO frees up a couple of hp that were being used to drive the pulley. While it's not ADDING power, it certainly optimizes, and makes it available for use however you see fit. Reducing weight will do the same thing - improves your FE, but also improves handling, braking, acceleration. To me, it's all really a question of what target you are optimizing towards.
I use the term "ricer" a fair bit, and I think it applies to the same people who are bagging on you in your thread on the other forum. In fairness, though, the way you posted it on here makes it look like you're trying to pick a pointless argument.

Not trying to 'call you out,' start an argument, or anything like that. I just feel like this thread is at odds with the one about people trolling here, and one of the things I really like about this forum is the generally respectful way that everyone seems to go about their posts.

Just my $0.02.

"430awhp and I can get 28mpg driving normally (not hypermiling, and I rarely drive the speed limit) running 100oct.
But since I don't give a **** about gas mileage, I actually enjoy driving my car."

The last post is the most...can't think of a good descriptor. Sad? Thought-provoking? The idea that the only way to enjoy driving is to accelerate as fast as you can, brake as hard as you can, never drive the speed limit, live in constant fear of speeding tickets, and waste more resources than one needs is outrageous. I enjoy driving much more now than I used to, because now I'm constantly paying attention to the car and what I'm doing with it at the same time that I know I'm reducing my consumption of limited resources and putting money back in my pocket. Anything less is, frankly, juvenile.
