Plus, you should be downshifting and using the engine for braking on long downhills (and getting "infinite" MPG for the duration!) and not heating up your brakes very much at all.

I agree! I only use my brakes for unanticipated deceleration and full stops. DFCO is your friend if used appropriately.

Do any cars besides the Scion turn off the fuel injectors when you downshift?

I think it's pretty common. My 1999 Saturn SW2 will turn them off above 2500 RPM in 3rd gear. Obviously, 2500 RPM is "1999 conservative". If programmed today then I would guess that number to be about 1200 RPM.

I've heard the Fords are supposed to do that, but on the other hand, when I want to decelerate w/o brakes it is noticeably better when I key off.

Would Scangauge show that your fuel injectors are off?

For example, "∞ MPG," or in the case of the Scion, "9999 MPG?

It sounds like your injectors are still fueling.

The salesman actually showed me a Saturn before they brought over the Forester that I bought. I just did not know anything about Saturns, although I hardly knew anything about Subarus.

Saturns have always been aerodynamic, while Subarus have always been AWD, and the Forester was boxy.

It almost seems like that was all that I needed to know.

My 1981 Datsun cuts fuel above around 3000 rpm (it's better than nothing I suppose).
It only ever happens on a particular long, steep hill on my commute and feels like engine braking suddenly increases.

DIY injection cut-off??

I wonder if, in cars which do not cut off fuel injection, you could arrange a DIY conversion?

Maybe a vacuum switch to show deceleration and an arguino setup to check engine revs...??

I wonder if you'd get worthwhile results?

wheel skirts vs drag coefficient pictorial table

Here is a drag table I put together for the effect of wheel skirts on a Jaray-bodied 1936 Adler. The data was provided by Alex Tremulis.
