LED Lighting is the way to go to save

In theory a properly powered LED light should last quite a bit longer than any of us in a normal home setting.

I illuminate my bedroom with about 1600 LED's and it consumes less than 30 watts of power. its FAR brighter than the dual 150 watt floor lamps I used to use :-) More "complete" brightness too. The whole room is evenly lit.

I also converted the bathrooms to LED's

As money allows I will convert the rest of the house. I found these 198 LED tubes on ebay. they drew 12 watts were insanely bright but died in a few months. WAY over powered. The design was ok just too much power. SO I got a variac off ebay for $40. one of these can run 30-40 or more LED tubes :-) I turned the volts down to around 80 volts so each tube was only drawing 3.5 - 4.0 watts of power. No more burn outs over a year and counting now. I decided on the voltages based on temperature. I shoved a digital thermometer inside the tube and turned down the power until they stopped overheating. IE no more than 10' above ambient. that happened in my case to be about 80v. (if you lower volts you also lower wattage) I could not lower the watts so I lowered the volts to get my wattage drop.

If I want brighter I just use more tubes :-)

I will try and get some pics online when time permits

That's cool! My brother is a LED nut. He's constantly making things out of them.

The future looks bright for the technology:

Hahaha Victum of Ethanol I love it :-) I am definitely in that camp! (read your nick subtitle :-)

OLED is fascinating but I am concerned over its relatively short life span.
