90 day: 39.72 mpg (US)

Oxygen Blue - '00 Honda Insight
90 day: 54.69 mpg (US)

Looks like you have the right idea! I built one of these several years ago to pull behind my Honda Insight:














While far from perfect, I still managed to average 57mpg with a target speed of 65mph, while carrying over 1000lbs on a 1500 mile trip.
