The 5 on 4.5 inch lug pattern fits most 5 lug car wheels.
5 on 5 fits all kinds of half ton truck wheels.
Forget about the folding tongue, that's the opposite of sturdy. Put a tool box on it and use that space. Put wiring for your trailer lights in there, ratchet straps, spare tire and such.

I've considered shortening the axle and moving the wheels inboard of the frame. requires new mounting points for the springs.

I have done it. It's a lot of work to do it right.

I did it correctly so it rides perfect and a lot more sturdy than mass produced junk.

Well, Fox, that would be one way to get the wheels out of the airflow.

Can you do any kind of fabrication?

There is no issue with the folding tongue. It's still stronger than the stationary single beam tongue on the 4x4 trailer. The tongue weight shouldn't exceed 500 lbs anyhow, so if someone is breaking their folding tongue, they were doing it wrong all along. Being able to fold the trailer is a huge bonus if you don't have the room to store it.
I was able to get 2 cars, a motorcycle, futon, ping pong table, and the folding trailer into my 2 car garage. If left out in the rain, the plywood decking would probably rot out.
No doubt there are many better trailers, but if you're talking about hauling camping gear, there is no reason to over-engineer and over spend.

Hi oil pan 4,
Yeah, if you’re talking to me, I built my last trailer from 1/4 box and angle. I’m not a master fabricator by any means, but I’m ok.

Just as a thought experiment for myself, I scaled my car, as well as the u haul sports trailer in sketchup, and put the template over them. The trailer is a little shallower angle than the template, but it also is much lower than the template following off the end of the Forester. So, it appears it would be fully in the car's wake, so maybe it wouldn't destroy the milage too bad. I'm new to this aero thing, so I don't know if the ideal would be to have the trailer up higher, and more closely matched to the template. Also, interestingly, the tongue is only 32" inches long to the point of the trailer, so u haul was clearly trying to minimize the gap as much as possible.
