Tires make a BIG difference!

I had the tires replaced on the rear of my Prius back in November, and then the fronts a few weeks ago.

The rear tire replacement eliminated an awful noise so that was a big plus, but had no effect on mileage. The lady behind the counter reported that the tires were "cupped," but didn't elaborate.

I don't know what the fronts are - I just told the guy, as long as they're black and round I'm happy. BIG mistake! Fuel economy is way off. It's always down some at this time of year because of the cold but there's more. Parts of the road where I could coast and gain speed, now I coast and lose speed. The new tires are the ONLY change that has been made. And I can hear these tires. They make a distinct noise that is brand new to the car.

I know it's been said here before, but dang does it ever bear repeating. Tires are HUGE in the economy game.

I may just eat the cost and get them replaced. It's so bad I'm demoralized to the point I have skipped several fuel log entries.

I think the muggles don't notice because they are never coasting.

Not only are there huge differences in RR between tires of the same size - up to 60% - but differences in state of wear also has a major effect - worn tires being much lower in RR than new tires. As you have seen, you have to be very careful in your selection.

It says what they sold to you right on the sidewall.

You know you're an ecomodder/ecodriver when you have this kind of datapoint tucked away in your brain in the first place.

I remember being dumbfounded by the positive difference in coasting distance when I put worn out RE92's on the ForkenSwift for the first time. I coasted that car a LOT to maximize its otherwise very short range.

PS: elhigh - I know you don't post here a lot, but I have to say I enjoy reading your frequent takes on Nice Price / Crack Pipe / No Dice on Jalopnik. You're a good writer!

You can at least get a little of it back by pumping up the pressures in them.

Don't you just hate it when someone says the same thing you were going to say? Especially when they use your own quotes!

Indeed it does, and I still don't know because I still haven't looked. When I take the three seconds required to actually squat down there and squint myopically at the sidewall and read it, I'll let you know so you can avoid them in future.

I'm about ready to order tires I want, instead of just putting up with whatever my rural tire shop had on the shelf. This is bad.

Tires are Hercules Roadtour 455 in 185/65 R15.

I'm asking my local tire guys about ordering in some Michelin Defenders.

Because you have to be Hercules to push them down the road?
