Transmission rebuild books?

What are your favorite transmission repair/mod books, if any? Not necessarily Honda specific. All recommendations welcome.

I am continuing the prep for my rebuild of my old 1998 Civic DX coupe transmission. I want to replace the FD with the VX FD I bought a couple years ago. Before I consider buying one of these rebuild kits from Synchrotech, I want to properly test and diagnose any issues with my oldie. So I need to learn more than youtube and my Honda FSM can offer. I have never rebuilt a transmission. I found this book online and have an interlibrary loan request in at my library (get it for free): How to Rebuild and Modify Your Manual Transmission - Robert Bowen - Google Books

Do you have favorite books? Maybe great reference websites?

For the SOHC D series all you need is the Factory Service Manual and me. I'm also a dealer for Synchrotech but you are already in Cali. Just contact James or Dave.

The casting codes, aka P20/A000 or P20/B000 are something I figured out and the info has been shared GREATLY for 15+ years.

Likely you won't need a whole rebuild kit. ISB + seals then other parts as needed.

I would suggest a look at the Transmission Forum and the stickys/FAQ on D-Series.org - Your Ultimate D-Series Resource for more info.

Aquafina and I have walked many through a rebuild over the web.

Mista bone is right. I was afraid to do it as well but the FSM does have rebuild info as well as exploded diagrams and torques for everything. I've done 2 now.

The first set of pics is a lx manual tranny (my first one)

This is a close up of the case and my pinion with lsd block

2 main splines. New bearings and seals all around.

Case closed.

Good primer

Ready to go!

The second one I had the case powder coated

The powder coated one is a vx tranny. Looks like darth vaders helmet!

Thanks! Ever since I got heat and a/c in my garage, I keep finding new projects. ..

GOOD TIMES!

Actually, I just bought the second tranny 2 weeks ago today from fellow ecomodder slownugly!

Media blasted the whole case, New bearings and seals checked synchros (Ok), lsd (check the how to thread on lsd ), powder coat shiny black. Just got it in yesterday! Can't wait to see my mileage gains.

65mph used to be 2500 rpm now 75mph is 2500 rpm

If you don't mind me asking, how much do you think that powder coating will help your mileage?

Or did you mean the new seals and bearings were supposed to help the mileage?

I'm pulling your leg.
