Allegedly, used motor oil contains heavy-metal contaminants ( I notice that mechanics routinely wear protective gloves now ).
If you spread it on unpaved roads, as a former employer used to do, it can percolate into wells and aquifers. Microbes won't eat it, can't 'bio-remediate' it.
It's like the methyl tertiary butyl ether ( MTBE ) that was banned from gasoline.
It's permanently ruined some municipal water supplies around the country.
There's always a background muttering about banning Low-Lead AVGAS, something that would be the death-blow to civil aviation.

Used motor oil has around 1 or 2 ppm of lead. There's drinking water in deep blue cities that has more lead, such as flint Michigan there for a few years.
MTBE was a mistake.

You can get octane to the required levels of 100 octane and by now pretty much everybody has hardened seats. If not, it's trivial to install them, don't need to split the case.
Never saw such a big group of whiners as aircraft owners where they act like they are one step from bankruptcy

Even though ethanol is a hate-it-or-love-it deal, it's still not as hazardous as MTBE. Otherwise we would see people drinking MTBE

Ethanol just sucks.
MTBE was an atrocity.

To some extent, I am actually favorable to ethanol as a motor fuel, yet the way it was implemented is not the smartest.
