Prius Solar made me laugh

It's like they stole the design for this thing straight off somebody's Ecomodder page!
It reminds me a lot of what the ugly solar panel on my Insight's hood would have looked like if I had gotten drunk and said "yeah that looks great, I think I'll add fifty more".

There is more to the Prius solar than meets the eye,
The particular article above is just poorly written.
Highlights are
34% efficient panels (their goal is to make them cheaply in the future)
Being able to use smaller batteries while gaining daytime electric range and efficiency 700+ watts of solar on a car is nothing to sneeze at.
Toyota is not normally like VW showing off tech you can never own,
So my guess is there are no negatives to consumer grade high efficiency solar coming to market.
The real issue is of when?

To design cost effective solar panels you have to get the most watts for the least $.
You don't necessarily want say 14% efficient cells because then you need so much glass, aluminium frame, they take up so much room and racking that the slightly higher efficiency panels are more cost effective.
Last time I looked a few years ago 30 to 33% efficient panels cost about 10x more than standard 22% panels. To go up 40% it was around 40x higher cost.
If the 34% panels were double the price it might be worth it.

Yeah. It is comically ugly, but that's just a crude test vehicle, not a production prototype. Clearly they want "real world" data, using the best possible panels. I would imagine they are tweaking other things inside--from battery size, to overall weight, to software. I am sure they will not completely cover the rear window like that, in the end.

Alright, who wants to wager against my assertion that a product substantially similar in design and spec to this will never come to market? The idea is stupid. Very stupid. Don't know how anyone convinces management to release funds for such a high school science fair type project.

I wouldn't want to pay thousands of dollars just to get a few more miles of range.
Paying hundreds if not a thousand for a bigger batter would give the same range and would work at night or cloudy days.
