Thanks for the inspiration! One of the first things I did when I bought my 2000 Golf Tdi was put grill blocks on except for the intercooler and air intake. It seemed to help a lot since she was also missing the undertray and was severely overcooled as a result.... next step is get a skidplate!

The cheap pizza pans most likely will rust if they are not painted.

I blocked only the upper grill on the Golf with pipe insulation and I leave it on year round. In winter I have a coroplast upper grill cover to protect from rock chips. I remove it in spring as it does seem to make the car run warmer than I would like while climbing mountain passes. FWIW, I am running a Stant Superstat which also runs warmer than the original stock thermostat.

P.S. On the Mk IV the engine air intake is in the top driver side opening. Don’t block that one.

Still at it.

I tried covering the lower driver side and center grill and majority of the upper. The car got to around 207F in stop and go traffic and I got to worried.

I found a dragging caliper when I did the brakes. The caliper, smarter driving and half moon hub caps im up to 51.87mpg.

I am very interested in your under car smoothing. Your images look like you use self tapping screws straight to the floor. Can you elaborate more on how you installed the Coloplast?

Thanks a ton. Im trying to copy yalls lead.
