VW Produces 0.159 Cd, 235 MPG Car

Although it is an old article (2002) it is interesting to see how Ecomodders are discussing many of the same topics today that were used on this car. Perhaps many newer members like me were not even aware of this car. Its specially made one-cylinder diesel engine produces 8.5 hp but is still able to power the car to 120 mph. Some of its features: LCD rear view, cooling slots that only open when needed, enclosed rear wheel wells, ...and its beautiful, too!

See a detailed write-up and more pictures at the Autospeed Magazine site:

Autospeed is a little slow. I read about that car at least a year ago. I think we posted about it on here a while back.

You can't go 120 MPH with 8.5 HP

That's a nice article with some details I haven't seen before. It doesn't really go 120 mph. The article says it can go 120 km/h, which is almost 75 mph. That's probably fast enough for the USA. I'll bet is it slow climbing steep mountain roads. The weight to power ratio is about 80 lb/hp with the driver. Most cars have less than 30 lb/hp.

We had another thread about this car here:

The article is clearly marked as being first published in 2002!

km/h...right. I even went back to the original article before I posted to make sure it wasn't km/h and STILL got it wrong! Maybe they should have made it a 1.5-liter and 170 mpg.

I bet it could do even better with an aerocivic-style boattail - it was odd to see the bobbed end of the VW vehicle.

For the given length and practicality needs that's probably the best they could do. You could add a tail but it would be a few feet longer, so less practical in the real world

I mentioned that when I posted a heads up about the Autospeed article a week before this thread got going.

Oh well. It's one of those cars that's fascinating enough to keep spawning new threads. No harm.
