I don't really get the point. What if they'd have put the R&D money into an XL0.95, a super-super-efficient XL1 that uses 5% less energy?

Diminishing returns, I know. Wonder how much they could cut material cost by designing the car for a single person, instead of two. That should bring the retail price down to a positively reasonable $95,000. But really. We need this technology to enter mass production sooner than later so the costs really come down.

I'm still waiting for a no-compromise Volt...

Anything that helps amortize the development costs of the XL1 is good in my opinion. Anything that puts more chassis out there, maybe for someone to snatch up a couple of wrecked ones to Frankenstein into one good one, into which they can backwards-adapt a small diesel.

Anything that promotes more attention for the XL1, raises its profile and maybe raises customer base so VW will build a lot more than just 200 of them.

I want one. If VW only ever makes 200 and never sells them here, only sells them for six figures and I still work for a charity, I have no hope of ever getting something as economical as that. So I'm in favor of F-150 or Mustang levels of specialist models, options packages, hi-po, low-po, crew cab and whitetail versions. The more of them there are, the more chance I will have at one.
