VW throws in the towel? Creates the XL Sport

VW's lightweight & super efficient XL1 has been tuned and paired with Italian motorcycle maker Ducati. They replaced the turbo-diesel and electric motors; output has jumped to 197 hp with the addition of a Ducatti 1199 Superleggera V-twin, mated to a seven speed dual clutch transmission. The thicker tires and wider rear fenders of the XL Sport has made it less aero with a 0.258 coefficient of drag compared to XL 1's 0.189. In addition to screaming its way to 11,000 rpm, the two-cylinder engine will help the XL Sport zip to 62 miles per hour in 5.8 seconds before reaching a top speed of 168 miles per hour, but is it really better?

The Ducati-Powered VW XL Sport Is a Slice of Ultralight Awesomeness

If nothing else, I would think the more units they sell on a given platform would help insure the vehicles continued production. The sport would probably be more likely to make it to the U.S. and likely put other sportscars mileage to shame

The tires are eighty percent wider!

11.9% heavier
36.5% less aerodynamic

What are the rules of thumb? Is fuel economy proportional to half the change in mass or cD? If so, before the drivetrain changes everything, just the body decreases MPG by 25% (25.28%), so from 250 to 90.

How much efficiency do you lose when going from a 12.6-second 0-60 to 0-62 in 5.7 seconds? Isn't it from 47 HP to 199?

Honestly, it should still get good mileage, but they complained that the XL1 cost $120,000.

What would be the price for this?!

More than that, actually--the XL1 only achieves 230mpg when you count running on electric (and electricity as "free energy"); steady-state it gets something like 120mpg at 60mph.

That so does not even count!

I revised my previous post.

I'm having a dilemma...

Does this mean since I'm modeling my Geo Metro after the VW XL1 with it's small diesel engine that now instead, I should abandon that and re-power it with a Suzuki Hayabusa motor...???

Features:
◾Engine: 1340 cc (82 cu in), 4-stroke, four-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16-valve
◾Top Speed: 248 miles per hour (397 km/h)
◾Power: 197 horsepower (147 kW) @ 6750 rpm 147kW

At least this way I would still be loyal to Suzuki since it manufactures the Geo.

Think about it. One could couple the Hayabusa engine to the existing Geo transmission with a chain drive so that it utilizes both transmissions. That way with a 6-speed and a 5 speed, one would have nearly infinite gear selections modes.

One could label the different modes with names like...

Stump puller - (for the farmer)

Tow - (for the outdoors man)

Normal - (for normal people)

Sport - (for the enthusiast)

Suicide - (for the daredevil)

Economy - (for the penny pincher)

And...

Super economy - (for Mr. Scrooge)

If I were to do this.

I would have to rename it from the Geo XL 1 to the...

Geo XL1 SS. (Super Sport)

Here is the XL1 that I want (Ducati Powered)

Ducati Superleggera-Powered Sports Car From VW
Quote:
Aerodynamics - The Ducati 1199 Superleggera has the best claimed power-to-weight ratio of any production motorcycle in history. In the car world, the XL Sport achieves a similar record—the best ratio between weight (1962 pounds), power (147 kW/197 hp) and aerodynamics (CdA of 0.44 square meters). It’s a combination that allows the car to reach an impressive top speed of 168 mph on just 197 hp. The vehicle's aerodynamics are one key reason the car performs so well. The coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.258 and the low frontal area of 1.7 sq m combine to give a CdA of 0.44 sq m, one of the best values ever achieved and a major triumph for Volkswagen's aerodynamicists and designers.
EDIT: Yup. Already a thread on this. Here:

Thanks for moving this without me even needing to ask!

Drop a first gen Insight motor in it with a small turbo, and you got a quick, fuel efficient beast

Maybe not. If you look up the torque curve on the 'Busa mill, output drops like a falling satellite below 3000rpm. You could gear it ultra-high, but the Hayabusa engine might not have the twist to keep things moving.
