Walk Score: Walk Score Find a Walkable Place to Live
I stumbled upon Walk Score.com over at GS. Thought it could be of interest to some people here.
I scored 52.

60.
With the exception of the closest cinema being 60 km away in their category list, Lunenburg NS is great specifically because it's so little. But it's a neat place. You don't really need a car here. Thumbs up!

I've seen it before: I think my score was close to zero :-)
The big problem - in addition to the ones they talk about - is that they're generating the scores based on the "amenities" they think are important, q good many of which are utterly irrelevant to me. Why should I care if there's a video rental place nearby, when I don't even own a television? Or coffee shops, movie theaters, bars, &c, none of which I regularly patronize.
On the flip side, they don't count the things that are important: places to hike, ski, mountain bike, etc... I suppose it's a decent tool if you think their lifestyle's a decent way to live, but how many people think that? It's part & parcel of the "urban green" attitude, which thinks humans really ought to LIKE living all jammed together, instead of merely tolerating it as a matter of economic necessity.

I got a 58...but more interestingly it was cool to look up celebrity houses...
Crawford, TX (Prez Bush house) - scored 0 out of 100 and wonder how many times he's been to the Backdoor Bar & Grill that's 15 miles away
Bill Gates House - scored an 11 out of 100 and wonder how many times he's walked over to the Medina Grocery Store that's .62 miles away
Brady Bunch House - scored an 82 out of 100 and wonder how many times Peter Brady snuck into the Cinema that's .35 miles away
Friends NY Apartment - scored a 98 out of 100 and wonder why the cast went to Central Perk Coffee Shop when the McNutty's Coffee Shop is only .08 miles away

Now isn't that a perfect illustration of what I was saying? A place that offers absolutely nothing worth having, where the chief difference from a cell at the state prison is that prison cells don't rent for upwards of a couple thousand a month, and this is what the WalkScore people think is livable?

I gotta 72! But this means trudging through several feet of snow (not properly cleaned sidewalks) and dealing with -15 F weather with windchills far below that.
Oh well, i gotta bike, and that gets me everywhere I go most of the time.

Walkable Reality
Stuttgart rated a 75 and it really is a walkable town. I live in Echterdingen, a suburb of the city, which only rated a 37. In reality my little town should rate a 70. It is 4 miles to work...which I walk or bike every day...has over 10 eating establishments within 10 minutes walking or less, two bicycle shops, 3 walkable miles from the international airport, walking trails to the neighboring towns, and more bakeries than you can shake a stick at. What more could you ask for?
