Washing machine made horrible noise looks to be full of gravel
The washing machine made a terrible noise on the spin cycle and when I got down looked to be full of gravel
the material is extremely strong non metallic with white chunks and the motor/ assembly is stuck
I’m having trouble getting the local water supply lines shut off and the cold hose dripped a bit from the supply which has never happened
No leaks on the washer everything feels smooth
Will get to have fun tearing this apart to see if it’s salvageable
Anyone see this before?

Galvanized water line anywhere in the system? Should have screens on the water line by default on less than 10 year old hoses.
Or since it sounds like bearing destruction, perhaps a seal failure at the bottom of the drum.

I’m guessing 40 year old hoses, etc
Will be buying new hose for the supply, cold side is in bad shape, hot looks brand new but is the same age.
Was a bear to get water shut off without breaking anything .
The drum and agitator can move about half the distance they should then hits something
My vacation visiting family will be repairs, need to do an oil change too.

On most of the top loader washers I have repaired, the water pump is driven from the main motor under the drum. Seal failures are common but not enough to wet the floor. Had a Kenmore do this, found an impeller piece in the output pipe. Stupid machine did it twice before it got replaced.

I'm not sure why, but any top-loader washing machine are always quite noisy in my mother's apartment have been quite noisy on the spin cycle.

New washer time, appears the people at GE didn’t figure the area under the agitator needed sealing and paint

Why would they? They make new washers, so if your old one lasts forever, they are out of a job. Go ahead and ask if the new one is sealed properly.

The new one costs 2.5x more than the old one, is smaller, slower and vibrates more despite being quieter
So I’m guessing no, it probably will last half as long and require twice as many repairs
