That must have been an interesting driving cycle for a gas 3008 (120hp?) to get better mileage than a Prius, even though it tests far worse.

I've never heard of a Prius owner call it a Pious either. I'll leave everyone to draw their own conclusions.

So you're saying that a Prius isn't more economical than a car two classes smaller?

I have a Fiat 500 (same size as a 107 for our US friends), and yes it beat's the Prius for economy. The Prius on the other hand can bring home just about anything from Ikea or the hardware store without worry. Which is the more practical car if you could only have one?

The added cost of a hybrid is virtually zero. The Camry Hybrid is only $2.5k extra for a ~2 year payback over an ICE (and it's faster too!). Similar story for the Corolla Hybrid. The Prius is an expensive car to a point, but unless we have a pure ICE version to compare to..

Using less fuel doesn't necessarily mean lower emissions (other than CO2).

Rust, well it's just an industry wide thing that European cars are better built to deal with rust.

Diesel? You're kidding right? Recent emissions scandals aside, modern diesels are an absolute nightmare to own. EU6 and EU7 will be the last of them as all the emissions 'tech' has made them economically unviable past warranty. How much is a DPF $4-8k? injectors $6k? additives, clogged EGRs, DMFs, all sorts of BS. Diesels used to go 500K but now you'll be well advised to sell before 150K.

All those emissions hardware became a nightmare, but I still would rather get a comparable Diesel instead of a Prius.

I have chosen to take the technology of the hybrids over the stink and potentially cancer causing particulates of diesels. The lower servicing costs and greater reliability are a bonus. I have seen way too many Peugeots and other new diesels having repairs that cost in the thousands of dollars with relatively low miles on the clock.

I like looking under the hood and finding a very straight forward, 90's looking engine. Plenty of space under there to swing a spanner.

Shame Toyota don't offer anything really interesting as a hybrid though. They do a hybrid van in Japan (Alphard/Velfire legal for import here), but it's over $100k!

A little late for this thread, as a seller, this is what I offered:

Bought May 2009, non-smoking family

Known defects
  • Missing right-front wheel cover

CarMax offered $6k but we let it go for $7,750 and a $250 deposit. In effect, the price range CarMax would have sold it for had we let them get it. A similar Prius sold for $8.2k on eBay and one with a salvage title and double the miles for $5.5k.

I appreciate that outside of the USA, diesels are highly prized since they have a different opinion about air quality. My understanding is VW-USA may have a growing inventory of previously owned VWs that could provide great value in countries that allow importation. VW has pretty much stopped selling new diesels cars in the USA so prices and availability in other countries should be much improved.

never be a diesel unless the configuration changes somewhat. Reason is the engine is more or less bump started, which is why it is Otto Cycle configured instead of more popular Atkinson cycle.

it means, as they went to the trouble to reconfigure what is essentially the Yaris 1500cc engine to Otto cycle necessary to reduce the starting load (there is no starter motor) I dont see them doing a diesel.
