Hiya,

The Smart car sold in the USA have 1L engines, while the largest engine in England or elsewhere is 750cc. They still have underestimated the interest in good FE in this country.

That video is hillarious, the fumes from the motor though have to be rough. Also, I have seen videos of the smart with the Hayabusa engines in them, those are sick too.

Check your facts, Neil. I just went to the official smart site and the official UK sales site and the engines are 999cc (1 litre). The major reason for the decrease in fuel economy can be shown as the 200 lbs the smart gained for US certification (+12%).

Okay,

When I saw the Smart cars in England (about 8-10 years ago), the largest was a turbo 750cc. They had 600cc and even a 500cc version -- and yes they weighed about 1600 pounds. So, these are the reasons that they don't get the higher FE that they used to.

The 700cc diesel sold in Canada gets ~70mpg (I'm pretty sure that is converted to US gallons).
