My thirty two year old Canadian Chevrolet returned 45 MPG on the last road trip. Just following the Eco shift light.

It's a similar situation with my wife's S60 5cyl. Hypermiling it maxes around upper 30s, whereas the non-US spec has a 2.0L 4 cyl diesel that gets 40s easy.

One thing I have noticed is the tyres are all cheap brand ones. It maybe worth me getting better ones, A rated if possible, or maybe even changing the 225 wheels to 205 wheels and upping the pressure slightly.
Top 2 tires that are sold in Europe that I'm aware of for fuel economy are the bridgestone ecopia and Michelin energy saver A/S. But I don't know if they are available in your size.
If you are doing a size swap go to a larger diameter tire. The taller tire gearing adjustment seems to always give better fuel economy once the odometer has been adjusted for the increased milage. A 2cm taller tire will get you some where around 3 to 4% more miles that what the odometer shows.

A few years ago a friend of mine switched from 175/70 to 185/80 R14 in a trucklet he still owns. He didn't notice any mileage improvement and went for the larger tires in order to imcrease ground clearance. I guess the largar tires being wider and of some obscure Chinese brand deny most of the increase which could be expected to fuel savings.
