Although you can probably trust your mechanic, I'd still double check the wiring before anything else. I also had this problem with my motor when I originally dropped it in - my 4-wire O2 sensor has 2 identical looking black wires and it'll throw a code if they're reversed.

Ok thanks for that!
If the 5 wire O2 sensor has the same 2 black wires I'll reverse them on Monday and see.

Ok we'll check it again, have you heard of the 2 identical black wires?

The two black wires are the "heater element" wires for an oxygen sensor. They are both identical and order should not matter.

If your oxygen sensor has a GREEN wire, that is Signal -
-The remaining WHITE wire will be Signal +
If your oxygen sensor has a BLUE wire, that is Signal +
-The remaining WHITE wire will be Signal -
These are usually stated in the instructions that come with the O2 sensor. However, I don't think he oxygen sensor is your problem.

Code 48 is indeed for the Lean Air Flow (LAF) Sensor. This sensor has (7) wires (according to Honda).

I've uploaded this for you: <click here>.
First, see the diagram and table on page 10 and make sure you even have the LAF sensor wired to the ECU correctly.

Once you have verified wiring is correct, go through the trouble-shooting procedure outlined in the rest of the pages. POST BACK WITH YOUR RESULTS.
