I killed my wood chipper. Broke the fly wheel right off the engine.

2011 leaf SL, white, portable 240v CHAdeMO, trailer hitch, new batt as of 2014.

That would be the prima facie version of the failure. I believe cRiPpLe_rOoStEr was inquiring about the actual breakage of the flywheel to crankshaft union.

The flywheel assembly has been parted from the rest of the crank at the tapershaft nub. I destroyed it pretty good.

Makes me wonder if a belt coupling could prevented such damage.

I bet that's why the "commercial use" wood chipper has a belt drive. The new version is going to be belt driven with a 1.25 inch 4130 steel shafts turned down to a press fit 7/8 keyed shaft. It will have replaceable bearings.

Too bad you most likely can't (legally) get those horizontal-single either Yanmar or Kubota thumpers, which have built-in pulleys in the flywheel. Definitely boat-anchors, but they're indestructible.
