Hey MPGmike,
This all looks amazing but what did the Roush test actually prove?
Thanks for the great write-up and for all the tips.
Are any of the technologies you installed on the Xprize sonata available?
What did you use to overcome the ECU limitations on MPG?

The simplest way to answer is to direct you to the MPGenie Resources page, where all of the vendors we spotlight are listed, with links. Specifically, products used on the X-Prize Sonata may or may not still be available. Some were custom made and were never available (like the Stratifyer). Some went out of business (the Cal Cat). I hope this helps.

What makes your best different from your official best?
For what it's worth, we have members on here with near 50mpg tanks, driven in real world conditions, from nearly bone stock Sonatas of the same generation. It would be helpful if you could set a baseline, and run the car before and after modifications were made, under the same conditions.

While I'm thinking about it, EGR serves a fuel economy function: it reduces pumping losses by partially filling the cylinders with effectively inert gases. On Honda's high performance engines that do not have an external EGR valve, Honda advances the intake cam phasing at part throttle specifically to pull exhaust gases into the intake manifold, to be sucked back into the engine (EGR). This does nothing for blowby-related emissions and is there only for the purpose of improving part throttle fuel economy. Racing engines basically never run at part throttle, and when they do, fuel economy is incidental.

Ecky, I really do not believe what you are saying. I am looking at the actual Roush test that MPGmike has shown, certified by outside source that knows how to test MPG. Until you show me actual real world test data like from a roush report, I have no confidence in your claims. From my experience, much claims people make are anecdotal. Real data from a reputable source holds weight, sorry.

We got an unofficial best of over 80 MPG with the Sonata in real world driving. I guarantee anybody that is getting 50 MPG on a stock Sonata that takes it to Roush will get close to window sticker results. That is why Roush testing is so profound! It isolates engine efficiency from driving style.
As for "Before and After" testing, the FTP-75 test Roush conducted was the protocol used to establish the window sticker mileage. So you could say the Before number was the window sticker.
As for doing a Roush test, making a single modification, repeat Roush test... we were fortunate enough to be able to afford the testing we did. Maybe I'll do a search of this site and see if ANYBODY ELSE has paid for such comprehensive testing to back their mileage claims.

Thanks for this trip through memory lane.
The Xprize didn't live up to it's initial billing but it was informative and fun, while it lasted.
I appreciate the pictures. As my wife would say, "I don't read, but I like pictures"!
