It isn't that I don't think the tail cone idea would work (though as you stated it may be too short), it is that I think that the same amount of effort could be put into a kammback instead and probably get better mileage out of the kammback than out of the tail cone.

The same amount of effort to make it into a kammback would be better spent on the salt flats racer look in my opinion.

The cone tail would be as much work as the kammback, but I have no idea which one would make the larger change.

I'm just playing with ideas.

If it were my car, pizza pans and hidden spoilers would be my ecomodder path.

Empty box cavity like the big-rig trucks (laid on the side). Bonneville style spoiler and extended lower diffuser with side walls (terminate in LED taillights) to maybe 25% of the vehicle width. ~18" or less? Walls can be inset or break at the angle they use on hatchbacks. (30°?)

Base pressure reduction and a smaller wake. Test in coroplast. of course.

This series also covers dynamically extensible base plates.

I looked at the bonneville racers Mickey Thompson ran back in 69 and he had a flush grille on them , maybe also the SAAB style rear whell undercar air deflectors, that flush hubcaps and the right rear spoiler, also look into the redline brand of gear oils for your diff a good 1/2 mpg there. running the shockproof light in the ranger now and love the stuff.with the grille you could try diferent styles of nylon screen or similar, and good luck , keep us posted, a bigger front spoiler was the biggest cooling help on my 66 GT, also high speed handling.

Don't close off the entire engine belly

Hot air from the rad has to get out somehow, and I don't think this model dumps that air through the cowl - in fact, I don't think any car does that? Dunno, but it would introduce a lot of hot air into the cabin. Pan the front half of the engine bay but leave a nice wide slot at the back to exhaust the hot air out.

The rear half of the car is a huge playing field full of opportunities for belly panning. I'm going to start doing my truck when the weather warms up, it's just a mess on the underside. NOTE: hi-po cars like the Mustang sometimes have such things as diff coolers and cooling ducts for the brakes, watch out for that on yours.

You could, just for fun, try removing the lip spoiler from the decklid. If your mileage goes down over a tank, put it back on. It looks to me like adding the kammback may not help you.

+1 on the wheel covers front and rear, and +1 on the wheel skirts. That's easy, low-hanging fruit. For attachment consider epoxying in some kind of little block that you don't mind drilling into. The epoxy should stick well enough without demanding you drill into your car's steel. I have the same misgivings myself, and my vehicle in question actually has rust-through in places - you'd think drilling wouldn't bother me, but it does.

I think these 2005 + Mustang's have plastic wheel liners, eliminating the scraping of rubber which the old style wheel lips were known for with larger aftermarket rubber.

Perhaps this plastic can be screwed into or glued onto using the wood/plastic block method mentioned.

Any way I could get my hands on your collection?

The "empty cavity" intrigues me. Have a look:

I ordered my GT without the rear spoiler. The bumper is rather squared off and significantly protrudes from the rest of the deck. it would be a pretty simple matter to attach sides and a top off the rear and enclose that bumper to make a cavity.

I provided a link to the PDF in my post. It was cited in http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...tml#post296613, with a pointer to http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...tml#post296353. The trail goes cold there because the link now resolves to the Coventry College main page. But you can search on the paper titles in the http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...ies-21204.html post to find each one.
