re: HID, they reach into the blue spectrum and ruin everyone elses night vision, even when occasionally pointed int the right direction. ALWAYS brighter isn't necessarily better in headlights.

One thing to keep in mind when increasing driving safety are also headlight upgrades. With xenon lights on high beams visibility is awesome which translates into muchsafer driving at higher speeds.
It`s just worth it to upgrade with and HID kit, during the night I`ve met al sorts of things lying or moving on the road, not to mention drunk people riding a bicycle with no lights or a reflection jacket.
I do agree that good headlights at night are a good plan. The problem is that they lead to a false sense of safety, thus leading to the opinion that you can go faster with safety. For example on roads with steeply sloped ditches, the ditches are not illuminated they are in a shaded area, so you can't see what's there, so that even when the horse, moose or cow runs out of the ditch onto the road you can't avoid it because it's too close even though you can see it very clearly when its on the road in front of you. This is the same type of problem encountered at dawn and dusk; there is enough light to see the road but not into the deeper shadows at these times of day. What you do see is much clearer further away on the road. The question you need to think about is what don't you see, and why?

Sounds like your car came out good. Here in central Tx, I hate driving into the evening, hit my first deer 3weeks after getting my truck in '05, took out the grill, headlight, fender, driver door and a dent on the bed. Maybe I should have gotten a car...

For cars with separate low and high beams, I might consider HID high beams, but I think HID low beams should be illegal, even factory. They're overkill, and typically pretty obnoxious to the eyes (and fwiw, I'm young).

Glad to hear the car is ok though!

I have to agree with the HID for highs only. even driving in the city at night with people that have HIDs as lows is hard enough, cant stand it on the highway at night.

HID is to headlights what SUV's are to personal vehicles. "As long as I feel it improves my safety, to hell with everybody else on the road and any adverse effects/reduction to their safety". A selfish, me-first, totally un-Christian approach to the potentially lethal social compact that is called driving on the public roads. Every time you are out of the road, you have power over the life or death of hundreds of strangers based on your driving decisions and these hundreds of strangers have power over whether you live or die based on their driving decisions. Every semi driver you encounter on the highway has the power to snuff out your life with just a twist of his steering wheel.

I wonder how many head-on collisions are caused by HID's blinding the other driver so they can't see the edge of the pavement on their side of the road and ending up with a "moth to the headlight" effect as they unconsciously steer close to the light to avoid of running off the now un-seeable pavement.

Driving a car would make glare worse than being in a truck or van. If the seating position is elevated another foot or two the HID lights are actually less glaring than regular. I sold my last car a couple of years ago and recall noting that oncoming headlights were much worse.

I don't own a vehicle that has them but if one came with them I would certainly use them in a safe manner.

Regarding deer - If you hit one and want to salvage the carcass, make sure it's dead before you put it in the back seat. <profanity warning>
