Side mirror VGs

I saw this today:

It looks like a normal side mirror, but it has 5 notches on the top. I'm wondering whether those could be vortex generators? The car is a BMW 330 Cd (not that I even look at Beemers, but this caught my ecomodder-trained eye). The other mirror also had them. I don't know what year this model is, or whether the mirrors are OEM or aftermarket.

Hi,

Here's what I did:

It seemed to help some to quiet things down.

Piwoslaw -

Yeah, they also have them OEM on Honda Ridgelines. I read that they were mainly for noise reduction, which some have argued is evidence of better aerodynamics.

Chevy Trailblazers have them too. Just three along the bottom.

i once read in an aero article (can't remember where) that the majority of "aero optimisation" done by carmakers is aimed at noise reduction, in case of sidemirrors this often means they're set up to deflect the airflow, away from the glas and onto the door surface, as glass will transmit noise better and is right next to your ears.

if the vg's work as they should they migth produce a smaller wake with smoother flow wich is both good for aero and noise.
on the other hand the lack of noise is perhaps not totally equivalent to good aero as certain mirrors might be designed to deflect turbulence away from the car

Does anybody got an idea on how much do they cost for some nice sets of OEM on Honda Ridgelines?
