No, that's the new generation, though I see there is an eco trim they claim will see as much as 58 mpg city and 53 highway US. There is only one 2016 Prius, the gen 4. Right now when I look a local Toyota dealer here in Southern California, they advert some 2015 models on their website still.

I posted the 2016 Prius EPA spec above. It's 54/ 50 mpgUS.

You cannot go by the Japan test numbers. They are way too high an all cars. Especially for hybrids and plug in hybrids where they do not replenish the battery. |

I checked the Toyota US website and there's no mention of the Prius 4 so I assumed you can't get one yet.

The question then is what happened to the 18% improvement on the European cycle Toyota claimed?
I even found a couple articles claiming 3.0 NEDC which would be 78mpg(US).

I'm interested in the engine, which has that claimed 40% thermal efficiency.
They said the spark energy went up from 35mJ to 100mJ to allow the highly EGR diluted mix to burn. Very interesting. That seems like something you might be able to replicate on any old engine, increase compression ratio, let it run lean, and use a more powerful spark to stop misfiring. I'm leaving my FRS stock but will definitely experiment with the spark on my next car.

The bigger issue is the average efficiency of the drivetrain as a whole.
Their electric motor is probably 92-94% efficient ALL THE TIME. No need to warm it up, or maintain the right RPM.
Toyota had a chance to really up the ante - and they barely managed a tweak. The aero could be better, and they need to go big battery with plugin charging.
The Tesla Model S is about TWICE the efficiency as the Prius.
