One of the issues I try to address in addition to low drag is stability. For a motorcycle having some down force in the front is important so I have been looking at shapes with a profile of inverted wings and a modest angle of attack. I am still at the sketching stage but I still have a fluid mechanics text to help refine things. The tendency is to use a low leading edge. On the highway the nose will need to be at the common height of bumbers and a sight line from the rider's eye to the pavement has to be acceptable.
I have been frustrated in putting pictures on EM since my camera produces jpeg files too large to post. Please use my e-mail at wgconnor@verizon.net

Template revision/enhancements

I was snowed in this week.I'd enlarged the template and realized how 'rough' and 'sloppy' it was so I spent some time cleaning it up and added a few features to it.
The underside reflects the SAE minimums for ground clearance.I put a chin spoiler on,and a 2.5-degree diffuser to demonstrate how the useful length is a little beyond 80 % aft-body.
You'd want to chop some of that away for license plate, lights etc.
The 10-section tail divisions have been better 'accurized'.I apologize for the sloppy work.

Thanks Phil,

I wonder if this could have helped with the Insight Tail Extension project?

Seriously, it looks really nice! I downloaded a copy.

Phil, that looks great. In your mind, what kind of front wheel skirts are those?

Another random thought: how much suspension deflection should be assumed when working out your approach and departure angles?

Perhaps a moderator could copy the new, prettier, "accurized" image to the first page of this thread?

Jim,the upper curvature is the same but a smidge cleaner so it really hasn't changed.
The belly reflects what SAE would recommend for any new car design. At SAE test weight ( 300-lbs ) added to car,it's not supposed to suffer a ground strike anywhere.
We can go below it,but it's got to be 'active',with some sort of facility to 'react' to a threat and move into a 'safe' position until danger passes.
So anyway,I think what you've is basically spot-on.She's a 'LOOKER'!!!!!!!!!
I do like the EPCOT car that GM did,and at some point I'm going to do some 'active' stuff.
Can't wait for weather to improve and see how the Insight's new booty does.

Hi Phil,

Well, a small piece of foam did break off the tail extension right behind the rear tire.

You know those large snow-boogers that gets attached back there? I was picking at a large chuck and it came off, but took a 1 inch square piece of foam with it.

The foam was in a spot that did not have fiberglass on it, so not too surprising really.

Anyway the wheel strakes will go right in that spot anyway when the temps rise.

Hi Phil,

I responded to this portion of your post separately since it merits emphasis....

I have pondered doing more with the underside of the Honda Insight Tail Extension to get the active angle closer to 6 degrees or so all the way back to the lights.

One big concern I have is the health of the old country roads I travel on during commutes to work. Suffice it to say they are BUMPY.

If I had a portion of the tail that simply dropped down lower than the current *hard slope*, that moveable portion would make one heck of a racket back there with all the bumps in the road.

It seems that the dropped portion would need some sort of damping, maybe in the form of soft foam rubber, or something else to cushion that constant vibration from the rough road surface.

It would be nice if the soft foam were sealed to prevent picking up moisture from the snow (or rain) when driving down the road.

Beyond that I can see using a small diameter rubber wheel to raise the moveable portion when clearing driveway aprons and such.

Jim.
