why wouldn't that metro be street legal anymore?

ah, well lets say safety glass, seatbelts, and a rear suspension are added. Would it be street legal then?
Oh, maybe there's a hight/weight limit for a vehicle to be legal?

Thanks for posting that Metro !
I found out some more about the guy that races the car.
His name is Dave Cloud, and he converts cars in the Seattle area.
Here is a site with a car that he converted.
What surprised me was this paragraph :

Quote " On Saturday, May 10, 2008, the volt runner ran away with the honors at the Seattle Electric Vehicle Association's Marathon Rally in Everett. On a single battery charge, she covered 101.4 miles at 55 mph using lead acid golf cart batteries. "

Very, very impressive !

That IS impressive!

I think they had some extra-special batteries in it for that trip. But I believe the usuall range is still around 60-some! That's still a great range!
