DIY: Hot Air Intake for 2003-2008 Toyota Corolla/Vibe and Pontiac Vibe

This one was a quicky, but it functions nicely.

I'm using some 4" dia dryer duct tubing.

Pictures are self explanatory.

The bottom half of the airbox that bolts to the chassis is what you want to modify (pre filter)

This is the bottom of the airbox (next THREE pictures)

I cut a hole in the box so that the flex tubing could just be wedged into it.

I had to trim a piece off and used that to make sure I cut out enough so i didn't have to fight the tubing too hard to get it into there, but make it tight enough so it stayed in to give it a decent seal..

The exhaust manifold is on the backside of the engine which makes this a great setup because the engine blocks direct air and wont loose too it's temp by much when at freeway speeds.

Do you see how the manifold guard has those 2 rectangular holes up top?

Cut out that center section

stretch it open a little and just shove your tubing into it..

On the same day, the temp reads 23f degrees on the cars temp display, usually the IAT reads within 6 degree's of that, not any more
Note the 87f degrees IA (Incoming Air temp)

function..

While driving around, the temp outside would read 12f degree's out since the car wasn't just sitting there idling, I'd see a max of 107f degrees at the moment. While doing 65, I'd so it dip no lower than 85f

For the original air inlet into the airbox, I shoved a rag into it..

That is all..

This is giving me ideas.

I could have a 4" air splitter that draws from two sources: one warm, one cold. A temperature sensor down the intake further, so the air has time to mix better, can get the intake air temperature. A control board could then operate a gate to maintain the intake at an ideal preset temperature.

Are their any advantages to pre-heating the fuel, too?

Not sure about the fuel heating, but I know it works great for diesel setups in the winter..

Once could source an airbox from a late 80's early 90's volvo where it had 2 different ports that one would suck in hot air, the other cold air.
The flapper valve inside the box was vacuum actuated so that if you had to get on it, cold air, cruising, hot air..

I never looked for one, but I've seen how it operates..

I have the 09 Vibe and so far I have taken off the pleneum from the filter box. I am considering the idea of converting to 3 inch open cone filter as soon as i find a technique in a custom mode for the MAF sensor.

That's great for the winter.
What are you going to do when the temp outside is in the 80's and the air coming from around the manifold is over 200+?

Didn't the airbox have an intake air temperature blend door??
I can't think of my last vehicle that did not have one.
There was even heat riser blend door on my 79 chevy monza.

Yes, I was thinking that was a great option for some, but not necessarily here in Arizona, where it reaches 300°F [Citation needed]
