Hi, I'm an ecomodding newbie but have lurked here for quite a while. Sorry for not reading the whole thread on this topic, but the thing I heard about Elio was that they had hoped to get the same government funding that Fisker got (but then Fisker was unable to stay in business), but whichever U.S. gov't department or agency this was, they never gave Elio the funding they were hoping for. And that was why the car never went into production, because they were counting on this government money (I assume it would have been at least tens of millions.) Sounds like a poor business model to me. Apologies if this has already been covered in the thread.

I'm not going back either, but, in addition, IIRC Elio insisted on developing a new gas engine just as the world was turning electric.

Elio never got off the ground because they promised to sell cars for less than they would cost to build. Anyone with any manufacturing background looked at their business plan and just laughed.

They were promising to sell a low volume fully enclosed car for less than the cost of a basic utility vehicle.

... while designing a brand new engine from scratch when there are many perfectly good engines already available. Even companies that already have factories (and dealerships and customers, etc) don't design engines from scratch any more than they absolutely have to. And when they do, they don't do it for just one car.

The Elio was very popular here. That's why Paul Elio is not.

Even though it would seem easier to go electric, resorting to a gas engine is not really a problem. Claiming to be developing an engine from scratch while it was basically a copy of the Suzuki G10 turned out to not be a smart move.

LOL! Thanks for the laugh! Looks like a little more headroom... and the sidepipes would have made Elio sea fast instead of flop!

Here's a link to my source about the gov't loans Elio was hoping to get, but which were put on hold when Fisker didn't make it. Apparently it is called an ATVM loan? Anyway in case anyone wants to check it out, and apologies if this was already covered on here since the article itself is ca. 2014.
