I would have respect for them.
But as it is they have wasted most of their money on exec wages and promotion and lobbying.

I still think they could generate some revenue selling that engine as a crate engine. Any number of Geo Metro owners would love to have one to drop into their cars.

Or at least the engine company can sell the motor when Elio goes out of business.

"One of the little secrets of automotive journalism is that cars break all the time."
"That's especially true for prototypes. And the Elio that we drove was most assuredly a prototype."
"The Elio spokesperson who briefed me on the car likened it to an air-cooled Volkswagen"
Quote:
It was not my proudest moment on video.
With the fender jammed under the left-front tire, I wasn't able to steer the car to get it over to the curb. So brave cameraman Chris Perkins and I cut the video, hopped out, rolled the car backward to free the fender, and limped our way back to our meeting point.
Building a new car from the ground up is hard. Even huge automakers like Toyota and General Motors frequently run into bugs, problems, engineering shortsights, or unforeseen malfunctions. For a startup like Elio, it's infinitely more challenging—particularly with a design that seeks to revolutionize the automotive landscape by using a completely unconventional three-wheeler design.
|
"this prototype's fenders are removable to allow them to roll the car through narrow doorways for display purposes, and that the production design will use different fender mounts."
Maybe 68 MPG for $8,400, if it ever happens?

Makes my feel much better about owning my Insight. After a few mods to my Insight I should easily exceed the Elio projected fuel mileage.
Some of the concerns after watching the video.
Front wheel placement might catch a few new owners of the Elio off guard?
Mirror placement?
Having a conversation with a passenger?
The rear wheel catching every pot hole?
Center drive issues will take some getting use to and the mention that the traffic around you doesn't understand what part of the lane your in?

Trike owners should pick up on all that in short order.

The most concerning thing to me is the other drivers and how they perceive the width of the Elio. Considering how drivers here in Ohio severely cut off the corners when they are making a turn, I can imagine the left front fender and suspension parts will be hot sellers at Pep Boys.
