I knew that (excepting the year). It's easy enough to find, the other concept in 1955 was the EA48.
Quote:
Number 12 of 15 prototypes produced between 1953 and the end of 1956, the EA-47-12 was VW's first attempt at creating a modern successor to the Beetle. It was the first of many Beetle replacements designed by Italian automobile designer Ghia, which is probably why it looks like the quirky Karmann Ghia. The car was powered by a 1192cc four-cylinder boxer air-cooled engine with a power output of 30 horsepower. In addition, it boasted a transverse link front axle, torsion bar rear suspension, and fully synchronized gearbox—unique technology for the time. Top speed was 50 mph.

I think the driver of that single cab was about to lose some teeth, unless they're really strapped down.

My eye stops at the A-pillar. There is a crease added that runs from the frunk opening to the sun visor. And the drip rail is truncated..

Only my second favorite Type III; because the rear roofline. But because my first car was a bullet-nosed Studebaker. I don't mind those probably 1954 Packard, else 1956 Cadillac tail lights.

Somebody should reproduce Ron Courtney's X-51 from a sectioned Type III Notchback.
