I just put the $100 reservation down on the Lightning. After looking at a few of the newer videos of the "pro" model, the one that starts at $40k, I think that looks good for me. Then with all the talk for the extra tax rebates for made in the USA and union shop going up to $12,500 it makes it a no-brainer. Even at $7500 and paying full MSRP, that puts it $34,500 which I can afford. Last time I checked the used value on the Pacifica hybrid and it's worth more than I have in it. I'll keep it until what will be a long wait I'm sure for the Lightning because guess what my reservation number is? Over 11 million!

The standard range pro still has a nice big touchscreen and all of the driving software, nice console, PW, PL, cruise, keyless entry, 4wd, independent rear suspension, a 32 amp 240 volt level 2 charger, 5000 pound tow rating, 2000 pound payload, nice 18" aluminum wheels.

$10,000 more gets you the extended range which is only 70 miles more but it does then have an 80 amp dual cord charger which will recharge pretty fast in you garage. That also has a little more horsepower but the same torque which I think is what you will feel. Plus you will be 200-300 pounds lighter in the standard range so acceleration may be pretty similar.

EDIT, I just read somewhere the reservation numbers started at 10,800,000. If that's the case that puts me at about 377,000. That sounds better but I also read that the yearly production capacity is only 80,000 so unless a bunch of people cancel, I may have the Pacifica for a few more years and I wouldn't get any tax incentives unless they expand that program as well. If they do go past the tax incentives and don't expand I'll be getting a refund.

I'm harder to impress now that I've seen the $20K XBus. Supposed to be available in the USofA in 2022.

I dropped $100 on an FUV reservation 4 or 5 years ago. They still haven't gotten to the price point I signed on for.

Vaporware is always impressive. There is no way a start-up is going to make a $20K street legal EV. There is also no way a KEI style cab-forward van is going to pass US crash standards.

Haven't seen either on a city street yet, but I expect to see a Ford soon.

To me meaningful production is at least 10,000 units delivered to real owners and I can guarantee Ford will be the first to do that. I also bet they are the first to get 100,000 delivered even if that's in 2024. My number isn't going to come up until 2025 or 2026 and by then it will be a redesign and even better. Never buy the first 2 years of something all new anyway.

Yes I'd much prefer a Rivian but not at double the price.

Telsa recently officially announced delays of all their upcoming models:
  • The Semi is delayed until 2022. (Original production date of 2019)
  • The Roadster is delayed until 2023 (Original production date of 2019)
  • The Cybertruck is delayed until 2023. (Original production date 2021)
No way Tesla is going to be first to market in the EV truck space and if their other new products are an indication Cybertruck production will get pushed out again.

Rivian is aiming to build 40K vehicles in their first year of production and that includes all 3 models - Truck, SUV, and Amazon van.

If you read some of the news pieces carefully, Ford is only planning 15,000 units in 2022.

Ford has experience selling vehicles. Isn't Rivian a new company? So far Tesla has made it work out as a new company, and they may still be aflote only because of their investors. Is there anyone else who's started up a car company receintly and has prooven they won't sink in the forseeable future?

I certainly hope it works out for Rivian and all the other startups. But we have to wait to see who actually will be able to stay aflote and who won't.
