Personally, I've had a 272 rwhp/278 rwtq 2.0L turbocharged motor in a 2700lb car pull down over 35 mpg due to the fact that it it was tuned correctly. The air to fuel on any car is key, not just putting a washer in the 1" tailpipe to fool the computer into thinking that it's running rich/lean. Attack the programming, optimize it, help the engine out by making it operate as the air pump it was really meant to be.

God knows, you can actually go fast while being thrifty...at least one could start out with something aerodynamic.

Ball on the manifold? I was dicking around with idle before my IP starting pissing everyplace and it was pretty bad when cold or there was a lot of load from the alternator. I think the best idea is a hand throttle so I could pull on the throttle cable and set it just a wee bit higher if it when cold/etc. I've been meaning to put a kill switch in for the IP solenoid, and a 5speed, and a refreshed engine, and etc...

IP Solenoid = injection pump solenoid; it's a diesel thing.
Had to google it to find it.

Some of us are pretty new to modding in general. Do you have some good tuning resources you could link to for us? My limited searching has turned up a lot of results that haven't been very helpful.

I'll need a magnet on the back bumper to catch the pieces..
Have you tried to install a flex pipe between the engine and rest of exhaust?

I know VW has the exhaust come out the back and down the firewall then to a ball coupler then to the rest of the system. maybe if you added a flex in the system just after the ball socket? Hmm? Maybe?
Just a thought.
I hate feeling exhaust vibration and have added these to many vehicles.
