Not worth the headache.
I'd rather swap in a D16Y5 or just buy a diesel to accomplish that.

Unless of course you know a diesel engine that is the same size and has mounting points similar to that of a D series Honda motor.

I look at it like a hobby, so while I agree with the comment about graduating first, if you are looking for a hobby, it is a good use of your time. Keep an eye out for a cheap diesel, and work on it in your spare time. You can often find old 5 cyl diesel that are not running or running bad that only need new fuel filters. The owners don't want to put money into an old car and they virtually give it away. Heck, I had a high mileage 1983 300td that would have been great for WVO, and I sold it for $300. It ran, but it had rust and a broken spring. I had found a much nicer Benz and I just wanted to get rid of it. I believe the owner has converted it to WVO

What I wouldn't do is sell your car and expect to buy a Benz and get it up and running in 2 weeks

hi. i dont know how many members you have from the uk.

we have had diesel costing about £5.00($9.00us) fro a while so the issue of svo/wvo has been discussed quite extensively.

most of the 4x4 forums have posts on the subject.

i wouldnt do it... ive had mercedes diesels for a long time some with over 400k miles, and they are very cheap to run and repair when they break and thats usually never. bio or veg is not about millage, its about clean air. you actually get worse millage. i would stick with your honda civic as those are great cars. plus its a newer car, unless you can get a brand new bluetec mercedes...

I know several people who got BETTER mileage running WVO than petro-diesel.

I wouldn't mess with converting a Civic though.

A guy I know has a pair of old Mercedes, the one runs on Bio-Diesel, the other on WVO. He makes his own bio-diesel in the garage in the summer, and stock-piles it for the winter. (It's easier to make at warm temperatures.)

Kit's to convert a vehicle to waste vegetable oil system aren't terribly expensive, I think a lot of them run around $1200. Greasecar is a popular one I have heard mentioned a lot. Or get creative and build your own!

There is a guy that sells a biodiesel conversion setup on eBay that lives within an hour of here, ( BIODIESEL PROCESSOR HDPE NO PVC! Makes 45 Gallons - eBay (item 150304021397 end time Nov-14-08 14:19:36 PST) ) and a shop that converts diesels to WVO in the Springfield area - also within an hour. ( Welcome to Golden Fuel Systems! - HOME ) I've thought about going either way, since the best mileage car I ever owned was an '83 Pontiac 6000 with the V-6 diesel. It got mid-30s with A/C on consistently!

A neighbor has an old MB that he converted to WVO. Apparently not a hard conversion to do, but (according to him) the biggest mistake he sees is people converting their cars to WVO only (without a 'start/shutdown' small dino diesel tank). Cold starting on straight WVO can be difficult (or not possible in some cases).

He does recommend converting to WVO, and is very happy with his 'grease car' MB.

I'm with your neighbor, TomEV. According to what I've seen on the different conversion sites, going with the fossil fuel on startup/shutdown wards off the issues of fuel gelling up in the lines when cold. It may be overkill, but I've thought of using my own homemade biodiesel for startup and shutdown, and running the WVO after things warm up.

An ideal-for-me setup would be to have a diesel pickup with the above adaptations for trips/hauling/pulling a trailer, and an electric car for the other 90% of the time.

I've been thinking the same thing for a long time!
I'm just finally finishing up the electric car part!
