Concrete doesn't burn well. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the whole point in living in the woods was to have trees everywhere around you for a good distance. So to protect yourself, you'd have to clearcut about 200 yards all around.

The homes I see burned are so close to the woods you open the back door and almost hit a tree branch or you open a window and can touch a tree branch with a broomstick.

It's amazing how long it took me to realize there was a different BLM. I was wondering why I heard talk in the news so much of the Bureau of Land Management. I probably didn't know the new acronym until 3 years ago. |

There is more to wildfire defense than just defensible space. That space doesn't do you much good if burning embers rain down and catch your asphalt roof on fire or pine needles in your gutters that you never bothered to clean out. I recently rode through the burned out areas along Highway 22 near Detroit Lake and it didn't take long to notice that a lot of the remaining houses had metal roofs.
Oregon just passed a bill with almost $200 million in funding for wildfire prevention. I found it odd that the sticking point wasn't how much logging to do but instead building codes. Apparently building codes for new construction are "an unlawful seizure of Oregonian’s property rights" according to Sen. Art Robinson, R-Cave Junction

I have metal roof and no gutters.

I'm always surprised when I see non-metal roofs in the sticks. You want that when you're subjected to snow and possibly fire.
I went camping in Molalla and the fire came within about 1.5 miles of the campground, and about 1/4 mile of where they closed the road.

I'm sure it comes down to initial cost. Asphalt roofs are cheaper to install but more expensive long term.
