She told me the other day that she really wants a Metro from before 1996 so she's not tempted to buy a ScanGauge (she wants to build herself a 'Guino).

Damn right. My wife has lead poisoning in her right foot. I put a grill block on her Mazda MPV van to try to recoup some MPG. I've been thinking of a rear bumper slogan for tailgaters. What about 25 then 27 then 29 then 31 then 33 crossed out, leaving some space then putting MPG. Like an uncompleted flow chart. I think if we clue in other drivers they'll pass quicker and stop being so passive aggressive.

That is so cool!!! Sounds like some friendly competition is in store within this relationship. It will be hard for you to keep up if she has a Metro and a MPGuino.

Nice idea with using signage to justify your driving habits. I like it. Gets the point across.
I have discovered that the other advantage of an older subjectively ugly looking car makes it easier to drive slow in the slow lane. Others will just assume you really can't go any faster (which isn't far from the truth).

I'd like to find a bumper sticker that really conveys why I'm going slow. I'd really like a sticker that just says "Drive slow. Save gas." on it.

I'm wary of putting stickers on cars though; I doubt it'd help the resale value. (though if you have a $450 Metro, who cares)

After my wife got back from spring break with the Celeb, she said "your little red car is really good on gas, I only put 18 something in it". Which came out to like 26 mpg. Sometimes I'd like her to try driving a little more eco friendly, but sometimes I'm glad she doesn't because she isn't the sharpest tool in the shed and it would probably just distract her from the road. But like everyone she does have her strong points.
