EMAIL friends results to PROVE hypermiling works

Hey everyone, I was bored at work so what I decided to do was look at my fuel log and calculate solid results to prove to my friends (esp the ones that laugh at my hypermiling ways) that hypermiling works (think as the average person: $$$)

so i wrote up an email that tells them what they want to hear, gallons burned, money saved $$$:

The average price of gas that I've purchased between 6/6/08 (first hypermiling tank) and 7/15/08 (most recent fill-up) is $4.569 / gallon.

Between 6/6/08 and 7/15/08 I traveled 3041.7 miles (that's a lot!)

IF I DROVE THE WAY I USED TO, I would average about 25 miles per gallon (mpg)
--> 3041.7 miles / 25 mpg = 121.668 gallons of fuel burned (Al Gore would be mad at me)

121.668 gallons * $4.569 / gallon (average price) = *** $555.90 on gas *** between 6/6/08 and 7/15/08 <theoretical>

///// however, here's my ACTUAL results (from hypermiling):

Between 6/6/08 and 7/15/08 I actually burned up 88.745 gallons of fuel (more green and environmentally friendly!!!)

And the total amount I spent on gasoline purchase was (still a lot) >>> *** $404.97 on gas *** between 6/6/08 and 7/15/08 <actual>

So not only did I save fuel (eco-friendly) I also saved money (wallet friendly)….

//$$$// …. a total savings of $150.93 …. //$$$//

A full tank for me costs about $50… which means that could already buy me THREE MORE FULL TANKS OF GAS!!

Don’t get me wrong.. I'm NOT showing off… Just want you guys to think about it… hypermiling works :-)

if anyone is interested, I could forward you some sites (i go to ecomodder.com) and some tips of my own. All it takes is a little change of habits and some will-power. No modifying your car, your fuel -- only modifying the way you think, the way you drive.

*** P.S. I've also been seeing a lot of cops around shooting their Radar guns on the freeway… luckily everytime they aimed it at me I just so happened to be going about 55-65 mph… haha (so there are other benefits of driving slow as well)

just a thought you know, if you really want to get people to do it, maybe instead of speaking in terms of MPG, you need to speak in terms of money $. i've already gotten a few positive responses.

Good idea -
One comment though - with all the bad press on Hypermileing - I would add a section outlining the techniques you are using and the ones we are completely against -
Somthing like...

"Despite the bad press about some radical techniques which are both illegal and plain dangerous (Tailgating and running stop signs / lights) there are several basic, common sence items which are nether dangerous nor illegal - and in some cases actual bring the driver back into the Legal world - expesially slowing down to the speedlimit"

Might help head off the Lemming reaction to say the Hypermilers are Dangerous becuase some one saw some report about tailgating and assume your numbers are based on Dangerous techniques.

I may do something like this as well ( i work with a bunch of engineers - they love data)

I am an engineer and I like data so I decided to run the numbers on mine, I too started recording my results and hypermiling on 6/6/08

between then and my last fillup I have driven 5076.7 miles

Now, I have averaged 40.5mpg since then, which works out to 125.35gallons of gas used.

I averaged the prices I had monitored in my fuel log (it should be higher because i started halfway through but oh well) and it came out to be $4.14

I figured 125.35 gallons at $4.14/gallon comes out to $519.36 in about a month and a half.

Previously I was getting around 32mpg average (that might be optimistic, probably closer to 30).

5076.6/32mpg = 158.65 gallons used

at $4.14 this works out to be $656.8

end result 1 and 1/2 month of hypermiling has saved me $137.44 which has nearly covered the cost of my SG2, at the current rate my SG2 will be paid for in roughly 2 weeks.

Techniques have been mainly slowing down, not using the AC if i'm driving alone, putting the windows down only when i'm driving sub 35mph.

I have greatly increased my fe, i used to get 20-21 before it and i wasn't accelerating fast.
now i get 30+ which is waaay above epa. it saves me a ton of money.

I do all that bad stuff, but in my proselytizing for hypermiling, I don't mention it. Most people to whom I mention hypermiling say "oh yeah, so and so has told me about you. He won't ride with you because it takes forever to get anywhere."

I even point out that it's the equivalent of getting every fourth tank full free for those who drive "crazy fast" (many still do). They'll say "yeah, that's very interesting but I could never do it. I don't know how I'm going to make my house payment, put food on the table, and gas in my car, but I could never do that."

Sigh....

As a side note, I drive 55 m.p.h., and I calculated an estimate of how fast a truck would have to be going for the excess fuel burned at his speed overcame the savings from drafting him (sorry for the non-gender free pronouns). I concluded it's about 59 m.p.h., so I rarely get the chance to draft since about 98.7% (made-up statistic) of the trucks I see are going in excess of 59 m.p.h.

After checking my file -
Pre Tanks were about 22 MPG
current average tank is about 31 MPG

with annual mileage about 8000 ( i do not drive as much as most of you do)
and average tank here in GA - lets call it $4.00 ( i saw $3.99 99/100 this am)

Old Way = $1454
New Way = $1032

$422 in my pocket

And with the traffic on my commute - there is no noticable time differance in getting to work - if anything - now that i am watching i leave home a little earlier and miss some traffic.

Sure, I'll jump in too. Since February of this year I've driven 2,834 miles which would have used 104 gallons of gas, and cost about $393. But my crazy new ways have brought the actual usage down to 78 gallons of gas and about $295. A savings of almost $100 in the past five months.

Yup, you cant beat savings in the pocket! If i drove like the old days, i'd be spending 2300 euro per year, now i spend 850 euro. A big chunk of that is car pooling. I estimate without carpooling, i'd be spending 1400 euro. Not too shabby!
