SOMEHOW, I have completely managed to MISS this thread!

I know I've been out of the loop for the last few months..... but missing something THIS GOOD!?

I am so in need of a good charger! (A manual 72V charger just ain't cutting it anymore!)

Ideally, I would love to have a completely Open-Source Electric Car (and/or Plug-in Hybrid!) The only thing is that I know next-to-nothing about electronics.

I can assemble an electronics kit, as long as I have all the parts, and plenty of good documentation.

Anyways, yeah Adam, how about an update?

Hey Guys,

I have done a little bit of work on the charger but have not made too much progress. I still cannot get the PFC section to boost. I think I blew up my SCR rectifier. I have another rectifier that I got to install in the car.

As you know, Ive been working on a motor controller as well. This is going well and should be done soon. Then I can get back to the charger.

The charger will probably be alot like my controller stuff. The logic board will be surface mount built on machines. You will ahve to build the rest of the charger and connect it to the logic. Should be pretty easy. I hope to get all my designs completed into production in the next 2 months!

J1772 Option ???

Hi Adam,

I’ve been reading about Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) using the SAE-J1772 charging station standard.

Could this be a option you could incorporate it into the next revision of your charger. - open-evse - Open Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) - Google Project Hosting and Modular EV Power


If I am not mistaken your charger would just need to connect and negotiate the power level with J1772 charging station in a fully automatic fashion. A circuit similar to this would have to be added to your charger - Modular EV Power It would handshake your charger to a J1772 charging station, and determine charging current Level needed.

Let me know what you think ???

Hey Mark,

I did really want to add J1772 to my charger, but was unsure of how many people wanted it. Well 2 is enough to convince me. (You and Myself)

I will be getting back to this project soon. Im just trying to get the 1000A controller finished up.

That module isn't doing very much. It's pretty much just a diode, two resistors and a relay that switches the second resistor into the circuit.

It would be more interesting if the board did more: provided an isolated pulse width signal to the charge controller (the allowed current draw is indicated by the pulse width), provided a motor controller "inhibit" output, or sent a CAN bus 'connected' message.

If I add J1772 support to the charge, I will be making it take full use of the pilot signal. I dont just want it to tell the EVSE that there is something connected.
