Old Mechanic: Subscribed! I just realized I hadn't yet subscribed.

I guess I have been drafting with my Asphault Camoflage, in that blind spot of ecomodding lurkers, behind your transport truck of ecomodding knowledge.

Cheers,

hey OM, I know you have already spent a large sum of $,$$$.$$ on this very cool project, but I couldn't help but think a cool V-Twin diesel would go so nicely with the Harley parts you already have... New 20HP V Twin Small Diesel Engine Electric Start 1" Straight Side Shaft Motor | eBay

the harley engine would be the exact opposite of the goal of this vehicle. they're heavy, vibrate like crazy, and aren't efficient at all, in any way, and they make no power.

Thanks for the link. I may get that engine later, depending on how the (free) Honda engine does in this setup. I could always use the 20 HP in the 3 wheeler and the 9HP in a motorcycle conversion at some later date. Based on aeroheads calculations and the lower height than I originally thought, it should be capable of close to 70 MPH with 9 HP. 20 HP would give it much better performance but the whole concept is based on the Patented in wheel drive replacing the Harley Parts at some point in the future.

At that point the 9 HP engine will only have to supply average demand. The drive and accumulator will give it hundreds of horsepower-seconds of short term peak power and the performance will be unbelievable, probably enough to shred the rear tire fairly quickly, since rapid acceleration will be done by the accumulator primarily, with possibly engine supplemental power.

regards
Mech

I used to be able to get those engines MUCH cheaper than that... I had started importing pallets of them at one point based on apparent demand, and a bunch of people ended up forfeiting their deposits on them because they apparently decided they weren't as interested as they'd initially thought.

My price on them was $1100 picked up or $1400 shipped anywhere in the US with 50% down [$550] and the rest due within 2 weeks of me getting the engines on the pallet. I didn't lose any money on what I bought, but I'll be derned if I do something like that again.

Thanks C, I wish i knew you then! I tried to buy one of those for about 18 months for a V-Twin Diesel Motorcycle project I was building...all to no avail! No one i could find had one or could even get one. They all said the same thing.."they're coming next month", "sorry, next month", "they have to wait for California Tier 4 emissions standards, it'll be another month"...and finally it was "i'm sorry, i have no idea when we can get them in", what a crock! I even went as far as contacting the companies that made them in China and India trying to get one...all to no avail unless you buy 20@! I even had a Broker in the Seattle/Tacoma area willing to accept them. So, i scrapped the project and moved on! I'd still love to have one though. I figured if Crazy Jerry could get that much power out of a 1cyl Changfa 10hp in his Changzuki, then i could get a lot more for the mountain passes we have here where I live with a really Cool V-Twin 20-25hp Diesel...maybe even get a little turbo off of eBay to boot! Lot's of 10hp 1cyl available but no one had/has the bigger 20-25hp V-Twin that i wanted until now of course. ...sorry, thanks for letting me rant! More power to you O.M., I only wish we were closer as I would be over a lot helping with your build! :{)

Old Mech, I see that the engine is rated 3000 RPM sustained, but would you be running it closer to 2,000 RPM?

I was thinking about (please bear with me! ) Mythbuster's car versus motorcycle show. My understanding was that Jamie's fairing with the frontal area of a car was absurd, although even it worked, and that modern motorcycle engines can be as clean as cars. That is rated on PPM, right?

I was just wondering what someone would do if they had some great project like yours, poured time and money into it, and it did not pass emissions. I know that there are always shops near emission testing centers, promising to be able to make a vehicle pass, and I imagine that they would usually simply do a tune-up.

I have heard of cars where they piped some of the exhaust back into the engine to burn the fuel more completely, but I do not know what other techniques there are.

I was just thinking that it would be silly, you have a tiny, yet efficient engine, putting out a fraction of the particulates of a standard engine, but since its airflow is so low, it fails. Could someone install a blower ahead of the muffler to pull in outside air and thin out the exhaust?

Am I a bad person for thinking of this?
