Also, My dodge Caravan alters it's shifting pattern over time based on the average driver… so since I have rescued it from the grips of my comparatively lead foot father (he drives 110km/h on the HWY and exceed 2500rpm when accelerating) the torque converter lock up point has dropped from 69km/h to 64km/h. Bigger savings on fuel consumption than you would think.
Also I like to drive with a gps so i never misjudge how far I go until a stop sign or a turn, I can coast perfectly every time.

I wasn't sure if I could post the graphs here legally, So I didn't.

Also, If searching for vehicles on that website and you want to get to a page like that you need to click on "see detailed fuel economy analysis" Under the vehicle's description, Not one of the big buttons.

And whether or not this site is quite accurate, I don't know. It might be a bit optimistic.
These are estimates based on computer simulations… from personal experience the estimates for the 2014 dodge grand caravan are WAY off. over estimate fuel usage by 25% at some points.

Based on my Torque app estimations. Points are averaged from 3 different trips on 3 different days, all mid 50''s to low 60's air temp, very early morning (4-5 am).

2008 Mazda3 S, 2.3L, 5 speed auto, sedan, all stock, around 70,000 miles.

Here's one from wikipedia based on some government numbers.

The raw data and vehicle specs can be found starting on page 22 of ntl.bts.gov/lib/5000/5800/5844/21st_edition/Edition21Chapter07.pdf

There you have it folks, if you have a 94 Mercury, 25MPH is your target speed.

Kind of debunks the theory that top gear is the most efficient, doesn't it? The Subaru shows similar if less dramatic results.

something not right with that chart, perhaps the subaru was a manual and the guy didn't hit top gear until 45 mph. for my subaru which is pretty much identical to the '93 model albeit now more heavier, 34 mph is the most efficient speed. 30 mph could be more efficient but the torque converter has a tendency of unlocking that slow over slight throttle changes and ruining everything. so 35-40mph nets me 40+ MPG.

I warned you it was government data.

I've always thought the "M" shape to some of those lines is intriguing

The PDF says the Subi is a 2.2L 4 speed auto. The only manual trans is the Corsica. It also says the data is from combined road and dyno testing, so this may be perfect (or better) conditions.

I've been trying to make sense of the data from the 1.8L 4 speed Celica and the 1.6L 3 speed Prizm (very similar engines and Cd) and how/if it relates to my 1.6L 5 speed manual Corolla.

Yeah, I've seen this in a few automatics, where MPG is slightly higher in the 2nd highest gear, not the highest.

2002 Camry:

If they were manuals, I would have already been in top gear at those speeds, and MPG would have been even higher.

According to this, the Villager actually gets 9/10th mpg better at 55MPH, 31.7 mpg.

My Odyssey has the same drivetrain. You can easily coerce it into 5th gear at 43 mph, which will give you better mileage than either of the peaks shown there. (just shift to N and back to D and it drops right in to 5th)
