Our ex-Volvo dealer used to believe that a wash and a hoover out counted as a pre-sale service when selling used cars.

Would the overfilled oil contribute to your DPF issues ?

I didn't check it right after it was serviced.
I expect it to be right, and so far, I've had no reasons to think otherwise.
If I ever get the feeling I have to check up on their work, I won't be using their services much longer.

It was between min and max the first time I checked, a while after the service.

This one's definitely a different kind.
They give good service, no complaints there.

Actually, Kings (now Snows) Volvo of Winchester, Hampshire, checked over my V50 when it smelled of burnt fuel.
I arrived there unannounced, late on a friday afternoon, they offered a seat and a coffee, correctly diagnosed the problem, said it'd take a day's work but that it was drivable if I kept the windows open and did not use recycled air.
All for free.
So I can't complain about my experiences with Volvo Dealers.

No, it's the result of them.

Too much diesel in the oil can lead to turbo failure, and with a bit of bad luck, it could take the engine with it.

Software update, forced DPF regeneration and fresh oil.

If that doesn't sort it, the car is going to Volvo for 2 days.

Well, the software has been updated.

Oil was changed again - after only 3300 km / 2060 miles
The oil is being sent in for analysis. I wonder how bad it was this time.
If the troubles seem to be gone, it'll be rechecked before the next maintenance to verify that the troubles are really over.

The forced particulate filter regeneration is not exactly a pretty experience.
It's an automated process, controlled by a black box.
Engine is warmed up, then revved to 4000 rpm with no load, and the regeneration process is started.
It took about 15 minutes at 4000 rpm.
The engine hardly ever gets pushed over 3000 rpm, let alone unloaded

I did some 100 more miles afterwards, and it felt rather smooth.
Decided to fill up again, but my MPG didn't seem to have taken a huge hit because of the forced regeneration - just 1 or 2 mpg.

Actually, Now that I think about it.. the Seat Ibiza 1.4tdi manual recommends that you drive "spiritedly" regularly to get exhaust temps high enough to avoid the need for regeneration..

Is it worth modifying, say, your motorway on ramp approach to hold a lower gear to get above 4k before going back to your usual driving?

It has hardly ever seen 4000 rpm at all, as there's really no point to it with these engines.
It may flow faster, but using more fuel means more new soot as well.

Some 350km / 220 miles later, first regeneration has occured.
That's way too early - it should be 1.5 to twice that distance.

Maybe like 320 said the Italian tune up once in every couple of weeks may be a solution ?

Even with 250 lb/ft in a tiny hatchback I push Helga past 4K rpm at least once a week - maybe thats why my stats are so bad ?

After all there is always a moron in a BMW 318i to plant, no ?

Italian tuning is a must- keeps everything ticking over- just needs a short burst

As for the 318i.. my iS has 6 more BHP than you- I'm the guy in the red one flashing his light and pointing to his watch as you do a right old 85 in the outside lane

Seriously though- thought the DPF regen should be at leat 1k? what does the handbook say?

I know that Pinoslaw says that his Hdi is almost as efficient at WOT as at part load (70-85%)
