Even the fear will wear off over time, and the positive effect on your fuel consumption will likely wear off with it.
Thats the difficult bit. Remembering that you are less safe.

Stops aren't that bad if you do them right. It's best if you can roll up to the stopping point and actually stop with no brakes applied. With practice you can do this almost every time.

I park in the first space when I get to work. It's also the farthest from the building. It's also the highest elevation. I've tested the extra glide down to the building and the gas to drive back up. It would cost me .1 mpg to park closer to work. You don't get 80+ mpg by ignoring little things like that.

I'm sure all the drivers behind me would just love if I rolled to a stop at every stop sign, especially on all the roads going 60-80 km/hr. Other drivers seem about to lose their cool if I gentle go 20 km/hr waiting for the red light ahead to change. They'd feel a whole lot better if they could accelerate to 50 and then slam on the brakes.

If it's a red light ahead, I do my thing. Going faster won't save them or me anything. I will concede and come in to a stop sign a bit faster since that actually does cost them time.

I prefer to choose routes where I don't have to make that choice. 2+2 lane is better because people can pass at will.

My daily commute is 8 minutes longer by hypermiling and I'm saving 80€/month, so I'm "earning" 30€/hour, ie much more than my salary.

Bonus : my daily commute permits me to relax. When I'm working far from Toulouse, or at home, then I don't have a daily commute and my stress level is increasing rapidly

Denis.

RE: #76) Automatic transmission: neutral when stopped;

Even better than neutral, put trans in PARK while stopped at lights, etc. This will be better for your engine than neutral, which doesnt provide the lubrication for the engine as well.

FALSE at least on every car I have been around.
Potential difference in transmission lubrication, however that should be totally fine even if there was a difference (which there shouldn't be).

But definitely 0 difference in engine lubrication.

Follow the beaten path !

Dunno if this has already been suggested :

On the highway / motorway, you'll often see two tracks where the wheels of all the cars before you rolled most often.
In doing so, they slowly polished the road surface to a smoother state than the road next to it.
Follow the tracks.

Doing so drops my fuel consumption by about 0.1 L/100km (about 3%) @ 100 kph.

Around here, those tracks are where the semis have beaten the life outta the road. I've found them to be much rougher than the non-tracks; say I have something rattley in the car, it quiets down noticeably if I hug centerline to get out of those tracks. So that's what I do.

I guess it depends on road maintenance. Those tracks are the smooth part on our roads. I drive in the tracks except when it's raining.
