Got what I think is a good pic of the car the other day...

But lately there has developed a noise as I drive, much akin to running a set of mud terrain tires or something... wheel bearing maybe?

I like it!

Is the noise coming from the rear or the front? If front, does the noise increase or decrease at all when turning left or right? Seems like our cars might be twinning when it comes to wheel bearings.

Noise emanates from the front of the car, and is same turning left and right as far as I can tell... just changes pitch/volume with speed... wife said it sounds like a plane taking off lol...

And now I gotta diagnose an intermittent issue with my tails going out, I was stopped and cited for non functioning tails, but when I drove up the road and checked for myself they had lit up again... boy when it rains it pours, eh?

I couldn't tell a difference in turning until recently when the bearing got pretty bad. It was mostly a slight whirring noise if I listened carefully before. <20 MPH is silent, >45 MPH is unbearable, 20-45 MPH is tolerable but noisy. Is it something you just noticed recently?

I wonder if you could get cited for using engine braking, since the brake lights don't show up while slowing down.

I don’t think they would go that far, but my brake and signal lights were working (I think) but the tails themselves went out (or so the cop claimed)

I wonder how you would even contest such a citation.

Maybe both your front wheel bearings are failing. There is a good test where you jack the car up and hold the suspension spring to detect vibrations are you hand turn the wheel, if I recall correctly. Look it up in youtube. I had this problem a couple years ago. Replaced the bearing unit myself. Not super hard but really hacky.

The hub/bearing assemblies aren’t hard to change in the Ion, I did the ones in my Redline in about an hour per side and it had ABS to deal with... parts store price was like $90 a side for the four lug (non Redline) units... talking with mechanic about parting or fixing the RL, if it’s actually gonna be parted I’ll just move over it’s knuckles and brand new wheel bearings and it’s big brakes(and unfortunately its 17 inch wheels and tires)

Don't wheel bearing replacements require a hydraulic press?

They sometimes do, but not in all cases...the old rwd trucks I drove just needed a hammer and brass drift to drive out the old bearing races, though a press would have been quicker... I don’t know if there even is just a bearing for the Saturn Ion, I just remember changing the whole unit, both on my moms car (just like mine) and on my IRL(only difference there is the 5x110 bolt circle)...

Three 15 or 17mm bolts for the unit, plus the axle nut, and it comes off with a whack from a hammer (once you got the brakes outta the way)
