2014 Honda Accord hybrid and plugin hybrid

So, you've probably heard that Honda is bringing out a new Accord hybrid with a two motor setup vs the old V6 (that did have cylinder deactivation) and IMA.

Some quick specs:
2.0L atkinson cycle engine
196 hp and 226 lb-ft of torque - max electric motor output is 124 kilowatts (166 hp)
PHEV gets a 6.7 kWh battery giving a claimed 15 mile range
6.6kW charger which gives you ~1hr charge time if you have a level 2 charge station, otherwise you're looking at more like 7 hrs

no epa ratings yet

New 2-motor design

Honda has taken a different approach, however, designing an exceptionally compact system with only a single clutch between the pair of motor-generators.

The first motor, which serves as a generator to charge the battery, is fixed to the back of a 137-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that runs on the ultra-efficient Atkinson Cycle.

The second motor, which can power the vehicle on electricity alone, is fixed to the differential that turns the front wheels. It also acts as a generator to recharge the battery under regenerative braking.

Interesting. Wish Honda would allow manual mode selection. That's the biggest nit I have with VCM... you can't alter the parameters. Too easy to kick it back into 6 cylinder mode with just a twitch of your foot, when allowing it to hold 3 and 4 cylinder modes more aggressively would make for better economy.

Honda has officially launched the Accord plugin hybrid:

Green Car Congress: 2014 Honda Accord PHEV EPA-certified at 115 MPGe, on sale 15 Jan with MSRP of $39,780; LEV3/SULEV20 compliance

2014 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid Priced Sub-$41K, 115 MPGe

It has about 13 miles all-electric range, it has EPA fuel economy ratings of 47 mpg city, 46 highway, and 46 combined in regular hybrid mode. It will cost $40K, and since it has a 6.7kWh lithium battery pack, it will have a tax credit similar to the Prius Plugin ($2,500?).

That just looks like an old accord that had an accident. $41k for an accord is nutty.

Looks like Honda did a little bit of tweaking since these articles were written. They bumped the city mpg up to 50. Highway is still at 45, and combined is 47 mpg. This is for the hybrid, not the plugin hybrid. The plugin is rated at 47 city / 46 hwy / 47 combined.

Does anyone have any idea what was done?

I've often wondered on front MT transaxle cars if one could add a lovejoy to interface with the main cog, use some seals and voila, instant EV hookup.

Anyway I really wish honda would offer a G1 insight like fuel economy advanced drivetrain car, 70mpg + EV would be excellent.

It would blow away anything else and the EV range should be better on a KW/mile basis.

For years I have though that a system that used an electric motor to get up to cruising speed, then a direct drive ICE with no trans was the way to go. Very simple and a good deal cheaper than the multiple input space age trannies used by most of the hybrid makers.

Good to see Honda getting back to their old motto, "we make it simple".

Lets see this system scaled down to a first gen Insight type vehicle.

Make it light. Ignore the idiots who think that all vehicles must reach 60 in under 8 seconds. An engine in the 600 cc range should do. It could be light enough to not need a very large battery pack to get to a 15 mile EV only range.

Such a vehicle ought to be doable for not too much more than 20K.

I also don't like its styling so much, and the price is out of my reality, but I'd actually like to see this setup snapped into a CR-V.

I liked Hondas styling a decade or so ago. It was much cleaner. The second gen Odyssey is a good example. Much better looking that the new one.

I actually still prefer the 1st-gen Odyssey. But, regarding the Accord, the 7th-gen was better-looking than all the newer models.
