Even though it gets good MPGs anything I might tow with I like having at least a 26gallon tank.

Rarely having to fill is a wonderful convenience especially on a 3000 mile roadtrip out west

First fillup today! Turns out, the low-fuel light (and concomitant tone, plus a menu notification) comes on at 25 miles to empty. The final standings:
  • 643.3 mi
  • 48.9 mpg
  • 24 mi to E
Per the numbers, the truck believed it had 0.49 gal left. But how much fuel did I actually use? Back when I was diligent about tracking my fuel economy, I would stop filling at the first click-off of the pump. But I have no idea what the dealership did. On today's fillup, first click-off happened at 12.8 gallons. But I was able to cram in another gallon without spillover. So…
  • 12.8 gal = 50.3 mpg (first click)
  • 13.3 gal = 48.3 mpg (Maverick fuel guess)
  • 13.8 gal = 46.6 mpg (last click)
The Maverick's estimate is certainly in the ball park. But we'll have to leave accuracy to the Law of Many Fillups!

I hauled a load of recycling to the dump this morning, and it seemed that the hybrid battery wasn't ready for action. It was a little cool out, so I imagine it wanted to both charge and warm up. I let the petrol engine do its thing (it didn't turn off at any of the stoplights), and I didn't pulse-and-glide to try to trigger electric mode. I kept acceleration to ~20% power in Eco mode, which kept the acceleration RPMs pretty low. And my speed never exceeded 45 mph.

Well, I've not gotten much worse performance. The engine stayed on most of the trip (about 4 miles), and my now-reset average plummeted. Turning off the truck when I got there, the trip report was 36.6 mpg. I'm thinking that's the basic engine-CVT performance, which would explain why others are getting around ~40 mpg—and why that Car and Driver article whinged about the truck's low mpgs at speed. So I feared that my honeymoon was already over…and that after just one tank of petrol!

So on the way home, the gloves came off. I took a mile longer route with way more stoplights, but lower speed and much less inclined. I lost 4% of my braking recapture to one stoplight but got 100% at the rest. I put my pulses at 50% power to target speed (~45 mph for most of the trip) and then abruptly released the accelerator to induce EOC. I then feathered the electric motor back up to coast or ±5% power. The fuel economy skyrocketed, and was back in the mid-50s by the time I got home. And the trip report was 78 mpg.

So like my prior high fuel economy endeavors, I'm having to modify my behavior to match the tech. The Maverick is yielding yet a third way from my other two methods for my '05 Civics. But the most impressive part is that the Maverick's tech allows me to meet or best the Civics with a mass 1000 lbs heavier (1.4x) with all the aerodynamic gracefulness of a brick.

Well the second tank has been a much bigger challenge. We've had record heat over the last week, so running without the A/C hasn't been an option. I remember on my other vehicles running the A/C would cost me about 25% in fuel economy. It's costing something closer to 18% on the Maverick. I'm at 42 mpg and climbing after the first gallon.

I also still been toying with Normal vs. Eco mode for maximum thrust efficiency. Not many realize that light acceleration is actually not the most fuel efficient. For starters, it takes longer to reach target speed than a high-thrust burst, so the engine on-time is much longer. But an engine also produces maximum power per fuel rate somewhere around 3000 RPM at 60% throttle. Eco mode seems to keep the RPMs lower while Normal mode makes it easy to spool up to ~60% power. But the outcome seems to be a wash.

Lastly, I've quite letting the engine idle at a stop if the computer decides it wants the battery charged. Letting the 2.4L engine idle, I may as well just stab a hole in my tank and pour the petrol on the ground. So instead, the battery can charge while I'm punching it!

Great post diablote.. i took delivery of my mav yesterday n on my first 100 miles. First mod: remove the radio antenna. Havnt done any experimenting but i know alot of HM1s do mirror deletes. (usually on older models) but i noticed on the mav if you fold the mirror in it has a better aerodynamic shape to it. thats gonna be one of my first x`es. fold em in n rubberneck. Of course i live in a sparce populated town and not to try in the commuter mix.
Thanks again, ive not been on here for a while, sold my honda crz . Ill have to check out your other posts. but ill ask now and thats wheel covers? no 17 covers for the steelies and im looking at pizza pans when i stumbled into yor post... later..zingaro

Sadly, my blue '22 Maverick got totaled last November. It got rear-ended by an SUV at a sudden stop in traffic. The bed was morphed into a hunchback's hump, and the damage was all the way up to the rear doors. The insurance totaled it out, and I used the payout to replace it with a red '23 Maverick XLT Hybrid. It's almost identical, and the performance is quite similar.

The LO you see is the thermostat setting for the A/C. This was a change from the '22; one of the delays in the '23s was getting the readout on the temperature knob. Since they incorporated two other indicators on the display, they omitted the readout on the knob.

The "Electric" in the image is on the user-configurable display. Both the trip and the real-time fuel economy will read "Electric" if the truck has only been on battery since startup. Otherwise, only the real-time will read "Electric" as in the image if the engine is off.

Not sure on the fuel economy bump from folding in the mirrors. The truck is a brick at high speeds, so it's hard to say if you'll notice!
