What you say makes sense, euromodder. My empirical data shows the bike on front did not destroy MPGs. Apparently the trailer cleans up the wake. Granted my data with this configuration is limited to 4 trips totaling 2,000 miles. The "hit" is maybe 1 mpg from a baseline of 16. Eventually I will have more data but performance so far has been very encouraging.

in the bed

From a utility standpoint I'd say lower the gate, run it up the ramp, strap it down, and maybe pull the mirrors.
I think the weight bias would be better. The Tundras ride great even empty so the load probably won't help there, but by having the mass more over the rear axle might help on rainy roads as far as hydroplaning. And should the rear end get loose on you,you won't have a big clock weight hanging way back there like the Tatra 87.'n just live with the extra turbulence.

So I decided on option 1. The bike is now tied down in the truck bed. I hit the road in the morning. Gas prices are up too. Lucky me. :b

Follow up

The trip went uneventfully well. I was hoping for 20 mpg but not expecting it. My EPA numbers (4WD 4.7L Tundra) are 14 city, 17 highway. I was pleasantly surprised with an overall average of 20.5 mpg.

BTW, I didn't bother removing mirrors from the bike, so it poked a foot above the cab and the tailgate was down. I considered flattening both tires, which might have bought just enough clearance to latch the tailgate. I decided it wasn't worth the risk of pinched inner tubes. (KISS)

Life is good.
