I'm not sure I follow this - insurance for everyone seems a reasonable idea.

Here every car (driver) on the road has to be insured - it is the driver's responsibility to make sure they are insured and pretty much every policy includes 3rd party cover for any car the driver uses. As the insurance companies can't expand the market they have to fight for the same clients so there is competition there.

Add in comparison websites and we consumers can, but don't always, get a decent deal.

because without effective CONTROLS we have no "REAL" competition. in a REAL competition market with proper protections from government it would NEVER be legal to use your "credit score" to determine how much to charge you for insurance and other less than moral practices. it would not be lawful to charge me MORE for MORE CARS if I have liability only. since my cars are NOT covered why should it matter if I have 1 or 20 cars? I can only drive ONE at a time. Don't start with other drivers your supposed to list them and they should have their own insurance.

Car's should not require insurance. DRIVER's should require insurance. yet I can not BUY insurance for me. I have to buy insurance for my CAR.

I am sorry but yearly liability insurance on a geo metro should not cost even $324 a year. that is highway robbery. I am literally paying $324 a year (last year $557) for a little piece of paper that says I don't goto jail if I simply get pulled over and asked for my papers and that is JUST for the geo.

if I so much as LOOK at an emergency room I exceed my coverage and "I" am an unusual example. sweet spot for age GOOD neighborhood. safe car PERFECT driving record.

this is a case of you have gotten "used" to being anal raped so you THINK its a decent deal when they give you a lower price but a price that in reality is still WAY WAY too high.

My next year's insurance will cost me £150 for my Aygo.

And that includes 3rd party cover for any other vehicle I am qualified to drive.

It includes :

- Medical cover (for recovery help from any injuries)
- Legal cover
- Driving in Europe as well as the UK
- Work use
- Named Driver with the same cover (Mrs A).

I declined the "like for like" cover so if/when George is written off I will get book valuation for him and not a direct replacement. But if I reduce the value on each renewal it should go down. I don't mnd a high excess as I keep that amount accessible, e.g. a non-fee paying credit card I don't use.

I actually expected it to go down more, I have 10+ years of no claims and only 3 points (out of 12) on my licence which is so common the insurance companies ignore anything under 6.

I prefer the NHS TBH, but thats a different argument

Medical Cover is a misnomer since you "already have" medical cover.

Yep, it just helps you to the front of the queue for treatment really I know that state health care is a contraversial (political) subject in the US so I'm trying not to debate it here - see my lounge thread on politics.

EDIT - if you really want to I am happy to do so via PM

I also get protected no claims, so if Mr Idiot decides to rear end me and I have to get the insurance company involved my no claims is protected and I get my excess back asap.

Just out of interest if you are rear-ended by someone with no insurance how is it settled ?

I paid State Farm a very small fraction of insurance on my 3-wheel City-EL than my 4-wheel Aspire. Craziest thing I have heard for a while! A 3-wheel METRO????? (I love the idea!)

a can am spider is too new and too rare to be in the used vehicle market at a low price.
