That's me too! My G30 diesel van gets >500 miles but it has a 35 gallon tnk. I use biodiesel in it (yeah, I'm a greenie) that cost me $4.00/gallon. That's $140/tank -- you beat me by $2! It physically hurts to put fuel in it. I don't drive it much.

I crossed the 500 mile line all summer with my 13.1 gallon tank, but haven't seen numbers like that since the end of September. (Best I got was 531 with a half gallon left in the tank)

Now armed with the Mpguino and a stack of coroplast, I'll be shooting for 550 this summer

*edit* 13.2 gallon tank

Assuming I need to fill up with half a gallon left, I need to achieve 32.5mpg in the Subaru to join the club. I don't think shipping tape and tire pressure alone will get me there. I believe I'd need a 500 mile road trip at a lower speed than I'm accustomed to.

Could Ecomodder.com be what finally moves me into the right lane on the highway? It hasn't yet, but we'll see.

my old '86 Tbird had a 25 gallon tank and got 27mpg normally. I always thought it was nice I could drive forever on a tank of gas. But that was when gas was cheap and filling up was still under 30 bucks. I think the most it ever went was 725 miles on a tank while driving it all highway on vacation.

My Metro could probably do 500 on a tank but I don't drive enough now to wait that long so I fill it up at half a tank.

I have a 13.2 gallon tank but I've never gotten more than 10.4 gallons before i get the fill "click". That was after running it below empty. I'm sure top off more but i really dont want gasoline coming back up at me!

If I got 12 usable gallons I might be able to break 500miles.

Although it may be an amusing experiment, it is not something I would be doing. It is actually the fuel in the tank that is used for cooling the fuel pump. Ideally the fuel should be deep enough in the tank to submerge the pump If you are running down to "fumes" odds are that you are not cooling the pump, and it will need to be replaced sooner. If you don't turn your own wrenches, this can be several hundred dollars to have done, and even if you do...it is still inconvenient to have a vehicle down for a $50-100 fuel pump.

I'll stick to filling up at 1/4 tank and figuring my MPG...I don't want to spend what I save on fuel doing repairs...rather do upgrades.

As long as the pick-up tube is submerged, the fuel pump will be drawing gas from the bottom of the tank, and cooling and lubricating itself with the gas that is pumped through itself. My fuel pump requires half a tank to remain fully submerged. Nah, I'll fill when the idiot light comes on.

I can take mine down to just past the edge of the E before I get nervous about running out. If it's in the middle of the F when I fill, I figure middle of the E is the opposite end of the spectrum.

The idiot light comes on with just under a quarter tank left.
